COVID-19 (2): Turns out it's going to be pretty bad actually

So it turns out that not doing the thing all the experts say is super important leads to bad results? Huh.

I guess thank you Sweden for giving us a control group to compare social distancing and lockdown measures to?

Pretty steep price to pay for a control group

In before Trump calls Sweden a shithole country.

10M in Sweden. 5% of US not ā€˜locked downā€™ so thereā€™s another 16M in the control group

Sweden you have shocked the world

Uhhh the vast majority of red states arenā€™t locked down in any meaningful way.

Bastards gave Boris an outā€¦

Not that he was ever in though so maybe thatā€™s all wrong?

Iā€™ve gone to work 23 of the last 26 days, so I can confirm this. As far as I can tell (mostly from talking to vendors on the phone) every single paper mill in the country is running at full capacity. All essential I guess.

Thereā€™s a reason weā€™re still #2.

Isnā€™t Japan another control group for people who did not lock down? They did mostly social distancing. And South Korea primarily did contact tracing?

Japan is under regional lockdown, though it took a while.

Of course. Smoking anything is really really unhealthy.

I definitely wouldnā€™t have guessed that, of all the countries in the world to have COVID, it would be Sweden of all places to elect to just let tons of people die to save the economy, while even Trump begrudgingly responded.

Was talking to my aunt from middle-of-nowhere, PA and the supermarket there is rationing toilet paper. Two rolls per cart.

My aunt has 6 people in her household. One is a hypochondriac and another is my 88 year old grandmother who is also a hypochondriac. There are 30 coronavirus cases in her small community and people are still outside on public courts playing basketball and stuff like that.

Itā€™s gonna take some dead bodies to get people in rural areas to think that this is a problem.

Yes, exactly that. Itā€™s not helping that even our local authorities are like ā€œgo hiking, go fishing, get exercise, visit family!ā€ ā€“ these are all excuses to be out under the SC shelter at home. Driving past some parks the playground is roped off but the rest of it is filled with folks out enjoying the 65 degree sunny days.

The kids were out at my place kicking a ball until 8 ishā€¦ All POC & because of that Iā€™m OK with it because itā€™s there mothers who are mostly in our shops and NHSā€¦ I took them to work sometimes so I know.

They came out around 5 & if Iā€™m thinking correctly they were out last Friday too, so maybe itā€™s once a week deal for them which is OK as itā€™s litterly 30 feet from there houses.

Iā€™m actually surprised how well the kids around here have behaved so far during this shutdown and I think the police coming round today to thank them has also been a benifit. Flashing lights and all.

At least here in the Czech Republic, there are exceptions to the lockdown involving individual activities such as running or cycling so long as social distancing is followed. Same applies to hiking in rural areas. Even tennis is allowed so long as social distancing is maintained. Not sure how that can be done in tennis unless no drop shots allowed but apparently itā€™s okay. And yes, law enforcement can (and actually does) enforce social distancing wherever possible. They have fined people for not adhering to mask wearing or social distancing but people are really good about taking this seriously even if they arenā€™t there. They know whatā€™s up.

umm i was told itā€™s medicine
