Coronavirus (COVID-19)

I take lisinopril for minor high blood pressure, so not so easy in my case to avoid ACE inhibitors. If there was a real possibility of a link here, I could ask my doctor to change my meds. Or I could probably even go without if it came to that.

The hard part here is that I drilled into this for hours last night and found legit sources holding completely different viewpoints, and I’m left basically stumped whether or not I should be concerned or not.

But it would be best derail EVER

Keep taking it for now. I wouldn’t think it makes sense to change doctor’s orders without stronger evidence.

From 22 poster rickroll:

for all incoming flights to china

  1. passengers are not allowed to disembark plane until they pass a test, this can sometimes take up to two hours depending on how many planes are landing at that moment

  2. upon disembarking you will have an additional health check with a doctor and you’ll be questioned about where you’ve been over the past 14 days and any illnesses or symptoms you’ve experienced

  3. they’ll then determine if you are allowed to self quarantine or are quarantined at a government facility

  4. if you can self quarantine, you can either go on a bus taking you to your district or you can take a private car that has already registered to be allowed to go to airports

  5. upon arrival at home, you’ll be visited by local government that will have you sign a pledge that you’ll not leave the house and will take your temperature daily. they will also provide you with anything you need such as masks, disinfectant, gloves, etc, this will happen 24/7 even if you land at 3 am it’ll happen

not sure how feasible some of these would be in the US, but I think not leaving anyone leave the plane/airport without first passing a test is not asking much and would do a lot

they’ve been doing this for months now

as a result over the past several weeks the majority of the cases are people who have no idea they are sick and are coming to china for a business trip

they’re so worried about people from other countries bring covid back that they just instituted mandatory 14 day quarantine in a govt facility today and no longer allow the self quarantine option

test kits cost about $10 and take 15 minutes to get results using common machinery any idiot could operate

there’s abolutely no reason why couldn’t give everyone a $10 test that takes 15 minutes as well if we only cared enough

as I repeatedly say in the the BFI thread, anyone who thinks we are incapable of doing what multiple asian countries do isn’t looking at it objectively, otherwise they must believe that asians are the master race and nobody else can perform their legendary feats

this includes taiwan, singapore, korea, etc that are all democracies and managed to handle things well with lockdowns despite being democracies

i’m tired of the “but we’re not asian and living in a dictatorship” trope to excuse inaction. it’s inaction plain and simple, we’re just so accustomed to inaction that we’ve rationalized it as acceptable the way fat people and smokers rationalize their behavior as out of their control

speaking as a former long time smoker and occasional fatty

$10 in China, made in China?

nearly all medicine and medical devices are…

but yeah, i’m actually trying to help some labs export because they all pivoted to producing them and now have overcapacity

for $10 a pop I can get a lab to load up a shipping container of them and it’ll be at your door in a week

same stuff used in hospitals, at the airports for arrivals etc with full certification

the testkit shortage is 100% policy driven as government hands out exclusive licenses who can then charge a fortune for the exact same thing someone without a license should be able to import for $10

Jesus fuck

Wait so there is a problem with both ACE inhibitors and NSAIDS?

My GF sent me this, someone posted it on FB. I have no idea if any of the advice actually works.

I take lisinopril too and I hadn’t heard anything, but some googling shows this:

No link and maybe ACEi offers some protections:

Keep taking your meds:

TL;DR: Nobody really knows, it needs to be studied, keep taking your meds.

Not to single you out because a lot of people are doing this, but can we not? There’s enough noise in here without posting every viral thread we find on FaceBook.

I mean, yeah, no shit drinking water won’t kill the virus. I saw that on Facebook and facepalmed. I mean, it’s good to drink water, but come on.

Probably a silly question, but I want to be sure. I know corticosteroids suppress the immune system and should be avoided right now. I’ve got a rash or some bites on my leg, Cortizone-10 would help. As a topical corticosteroid, that would only suppress the immune system locally in that area, right?

I have Googled it a few different ways and can’t find an answer.

Lol, I just got an ad on Facebook for a first-person shooter PC game called “Total Lockdown.”

I’ve never prescribed a topical steroid and worried about any sort of systemic immunosupression, although I have a vague memory about some sort of insane high dose topical for some sort of psoriasis that I’ve never seen. I don’t recall any sort of issue with topicals, even in infected patients EXCEPT for some ocular steroids - optho guys get bent out of shape about them.

Shit like this is going all over social media.

Most of it is either unsourced or half-true at best. My mother shared some crap like this too. Unsourced misinformation can be potentially deadly. It’s irresponsible to share anything that isn’t peer-reviewed and published in a journal and even then it should be taken with a grain of salt.

I’m keeping tally of countries that are vastly restricting/eliminating the flows of foreigners into the country. So far I’ve got:

  • Kazakhstan
  • Uzbekistan
  • Qatar
  • Bermuda
  • Ukraine
  • Ghana
  • Kenya
  • Djibouti
  • Morocco

Trying to keep track as the number increases. Mainly trying to convince my mom that staying in Aruba for the full remaining week of her vacation is insanity; flights might be stuffed full of Americans trying to vacate all foreign countries, while airlines are slashing flights due to demand and government restrictions.

If anyone knows of any others, let me know—it’s tough to find comprehensive lists.

Israel
Czech Republic
Australia
New Zealand
Slovakia
China
India

Well, we don’t really know. But the possible problem with both NSAIDs and ACE inhibitors is something to do with their interaction with the ACE2 receptor and the fact that CV-19 gains entry to cells by using ACE2.

But I don’t know enough to really understand the science, and if you dig deep into it you will see that many experts either disagree, or think much more research is needed.

I agree with Wookie’s thought to stop taking over the counter NSAIDs when there are alternatives. But short of better info and more guidance, continue taking prescription meds for now.

There have been a variety of these going around each with a different intro, different supposed sources, and paraphrasing to keep them going.

It’s a bunch of brainless dopes sharing this shit thinking that they’re helping people when they’re doing the opposite. Ended up scolding my mother on her Facebook page since her friends are sharing it too.

I don’t give a shit about her friends but my mother following this risks the health of the rest of our family.

I take lisnopril (common blood pressure med) and a statin (generic version of lipitor), as do 10s of millions of others, often as a preventive measure. They’re among the most prescribed drugs. Would expect to hear if there are any concerns.
