Cooking Good Food - Ramens of the day

I have kind of soured on C+K over time. The food is a little bland IMO. I usually end up dumping hot pepper flakes or hot sauce on all her recipes to give then some kick

Yeah we have made a great lasagna with spinach and mushrooms for a long time. Recently started adding eggplant as well for extra veggies and sometimes add fake ground beef for texture. I’m just not really in the mood for a pasta (or tomato) based dish.

Agreed. I love a simple red lentil dahl. I usually roast a couple of Japanese eggplants in foil on the grill, peel them, and stir them into the dahl. They basically melt and integrate into the dahl but add some nice flavors and creaminess.

That’s a great idea.

I do the same

Shakshuka!

This has been proposed but it seems like a LOT of tomato and I’m not a tomato person.

It is basically a clean out the fridge kind of dish, you can limit the number or type of tomatoes you use in it to suit your taste. I make it with a couple of bags of frozen peppers and onions and a can of whatever kind of tomatoes I have, I think I’ve even made with tomato sauce. Anything to get enough liquid in the pan to poach the eggs.

I want to get into the smoothie game. Currently going with yogurt plus fruit, with some almond milk as needed to thin it out a bit.

Add ins seem mainly about adding flavor, texture, or nutritional value, but it mostly seems like frippery. Any advice?

I made my neighbor a pie! She grumbled something about calories and potatoes but took it inside and said she’d “take care of it”. I stuck around a couple minutes listening at her door and heard her scraping something into the trash.

Way back when I used to work at a place that sold smoothies and I’ve tried just about every combination along the way. Apple juice + banana + frozen fruit crushed everything else ainec. Adding yogurt is fine. Swapping orange juice for apple is ok if you want something more acidic. All other variations massively inferior.

I guess I don’t get the whole smoothie thing unless you want to consume everything fast or on the run.

Personally, I’m happy enough to have some fruit, then a little later have some yogurt, etc.

For very active people, it’s a good way to add some whey protein powder to your diet.

It’s cover for milkshakes

My only advice is under no circumstances should you use a nutribullet to make the smoothies. Dude on 22’s daughter got both hands sliced to shit with multiple broken bones when it exploded. After going down the rabbit hole, there are apparently a good number of similar cases and likely class action suit on the way.

My standard smoothie is

80-100 g spinach
~90 g egg whites
~140 g strawberry banana kefir
scoop of chocolate protein
~70 g frozen fruit (triple berry blend)

Sometimes I leave the fruit out and just add a few ice cubed or toss a banana or peanut butter in but my standard one is pretty low calorie with a lot of protein which is what I’m looking for and it tastes decent

Greens. Lots of greens.

And protein powder if you struggle to hit macros on a plant based diet.

I’d like to know more about experience with different greens.

Spinach has the least flavor. I load mine up with kale. It’s way stronger and may not be as tolerable if you don’t eat it a lot, but I drink smoothies to get loads of fruit, greens and protein and not so much for flavor. Never tried collard greens or chard.

Apparently there are radically different definitions of “smoothie”. Mine is a delicious, fruit-based frozen drink. It most certainly does not include greens or eggs.
