Is insider information a thing in sports betting?

The League bans players and personnel from betting on games, I think, they may be asking the NFL to look into whether players or coaches that knew about Brady’s decision were involved.

lol that if a handicapper for the books somehow got leaked info they wouldn’t use it.

Does the league ban players/personnel from leaking info to sports bettors (so long as they don’t get a cut). Say Brady told one of his friends and that friend placed a big bet. Is that an issue?

I think the prohibition is very broad.

I can’t see how that’s illegal JA. Brady could always change his mind again

And on this subject. The literally president the USA was doing this with the stock market a few years ago so I think they Brady bets are going to be fine.

I agree it’s not illegal, only question would be whether NFL could suspend or punish a leaker due to violating it’s betting policy.

This is from a 2018 document, but I assume it is still valid and I’m not going to bother looking for an updated version.

Inside Information and Tipping: Unless duly authorized, NFL Personnel are prohibited from
using, disclosing or providing access to confidential, non-public information regarding: (a) any
NFL game or event; (b) any participating individual’s availability for or performance in any
NFL game; or (c) any other conditions material to any NFL game for a gambling-related
purpose, whether directly or through another person. This includes failing to report any request
for, disclosure of, or possible disclosure of such information.

NFL Personnel is defined as:

Unless otherwise limited, this Policy applies to all full- and part-time Club and
League personnel including League office employees, players, owners, coaches, athletic
trainers, game officials, security personnel, consultants, Club employees, game-day stadium
personnel and other staff.

This feels a bit like a butthurt sportsbook trying to punish someone who took advantage of them, but I suppose their lines are based on the assumption that there is a limit to how much is being wagered due to insider information. Maybe someone got a bit too greedy?

Discipline will be at the commissioner’s discretion, so punishment depends a bit on his biases and who managed to personally offend him, I suppose.

Yeah, the league can definitely do something.
Not sure the Book has any recourse. I wouldn’t put it past the NGCB to have some bylaw about cancelling bets made on inside info (ie fixed wagers)

From reddit:

For the DK 3 point insurance promo, here are today’s teams 3s in wins vs losses splits:
Game #1 (6:40pm EST): #16 Bryant vs. #16 Wright State
Bryant (22-9):
-Overall 3s per game: 8.39
-3s per game in 9 losses: 8.44
-3s per game in 22 wins: 8.36
Wright State (21-13):
-Overall 3s per game: 6.32
-3s per game in 13 losses: 5.85
-3s per game in 21 wins: 6.62
Game #2 (9:10pm EST): #11 Notre Dame vs. #11 Rutgers

Notre Dame (22-10):
-Overall 3s per game: 9.15
-3s per game in 10 losses: 6.9
-3s per game in 22 wins: 10.18
Rutgers (18-13):
-Overall 3s per game: 6.06
-3s per game in 13 losses: 5.69
-3s per game in 18 wins: 6.33

If you’re going to hedge, the formula to determine your hedge bet would be the following:

(($400 * draftkings_line_in_decimal) - (3s_per_game * $40 * conversion_rate)) / best_hedge_line_in_decimal

For me, for the Bryant vs Wright State game, the variables above would be:
-draftkings_line_in_decimal = 2.35
-3s_per_game = 8
-conversion_rate = .75
-best_hedge_line_in_decimal = 1.658 (-152 on FanDuel)

So, putting $400 on Bryant +135 at DK, you’d hedge with $422.22 on Wright State -152 at FanDuel. If Bryant wins, you’d win $117. If Wright State wins (and Bryant hits 8 3s), you get $277.78 (FD) + $240 (converted free bets) - $400 = $117. Feel free to adjust as needed, especially if you want a more conservative conversion rate or account for less 3s being made by Bryant.

I know this is just a tabloidy nothing article but I really do look forward to the day that the sportsbooks are ordering the sports leagues around. Shouldn’t the gaming operators just start buying up the franchises to make sure they are getting the info on the ground floor?

How is this for a bad beat story? I had a four-team NBA parlay yesterday. Having nailed the first three legs, it came down to Cleveland -6.5 vs the Pistons. Cleveland is up by 7 with about 27 seconds left. According to the game log, it looks like they dribble out the clock and turn it over on a 24-second violation with three seconds left. Detroit inbounds the ball and Cade Cunningham hits a meaningless 37-foot jumper at the buzzer to fuck my parlay.

Brutal. I needed the pistons to win that game to cash a +1400 CZR boost that was super +ev. Didn’t watch the game but apparently they were within 2 down the stretch before turning it over 3 times in the final two minutes. They got us both :(

Had a SGP boost to use up so bet Scottie Barnes to have a big game V the lakers. (I forget exact #s) He goes off. But I had to put down a 3rd leg, so threw in Toronto ML without thinking because LOLakers.
Westbrick steal and 3 with 7 seconds left to go to OT. Lose in OT. Ridiculous.

I’m back in Illinois for a few days so I figure I might as well take advantage of all of these $1,000 risk free bet promos. It looks like if sign up for all these sportsbooks I’ll have $6000 of risk free bets over 5 books. If I want the low variance route, should I just be putting 3k on one side of a game and 3k on the other side of the same game?

No. Hedge everything independently. Get a lot of cash on DK before you go

No. You’re leaving tons of free money on the table by doing that. Bet and hedge each one individually if you have the bankroll to do so.

Ok thanks, yea I can afford to hedge everything independently, I just can’t seem to get any money on DraftKings to hedge using my credit cards or online banking options

And Caesars wants a utility bill in addition to my IL drivers license, yeesh. I don’t have a utility bill. So this is more difficult than I was expecting.

Damn I can’t get money onto any of these books except for Barstool lolwtf
