Didn’t realize it was a controversial subject. I lived in libraries through childhood and even college, but with the Internet can’t remember going into one more than a couple times in all my 15 years in SoCal later on in life (I do remember visiting the newly built downtown San Diego library, and it felt like I had just stepped into a homeless shelter). Just imagined that libraries had kind of become obsolete in the US similar to book shops.
Here in Japan my wife uses the town library liberally. I don’t because while I can read Japanese, I generally can’t read fast enough to finish a book by the return date.
The famed red-brick “Home Alone” house has finally sold to its new owners — and they’re all in on its Hollywood history.
The Georgian-style property in Winnetka, Illinois, famously known as the McCallister family residence in the 1990 holiday classic “Home Alone,” has sold for $5.5 million, according to Mansion Global. That’s a cool $250,000 over its original asking price of $5.25 million
When I was a kid, walking into the library felt like entering a church. Things have changed and the buildings look a little shabby to adult eyes but I still feel a little of that same sense of reverence.
I see the city library has China Beach DVDs now. Probably won’t be able to rewatch any other way so I need to get on the wait-list.
My hometown had a super old library with little back rooms, a fireplace etc. It was wonderful and I will always remember the smell and the creaking wood floors. I believe they built an addition in later years.
I moved the last day or so of posts from the 2024 thread here to keep that discussion going but because I clicked “preserve chronological order” Suzzer is now the OP of eyebooger’s thread.
the united states is like a decade behind on payment processing stuff for some reason… watching asian dramas from like 2015 and there were better payment options and electronic doorlocks and shit blew my mind initially.
Woh Toyko Rose’s life was wilder than I would have thought. I didn’t know she was an American POW who was forced to broadcast but did so on the condition that she never said any propoganda against the US.
having been robbed and pickpocketed as many times as i have live in my former career there is nothing that beats the tried and true rubber band + sweatpants where you can feel it next to your skin. That’s something I learned from the han solo novels. The legends canon has all these novels where he’s a professional card player and has to deal with being pickpocketed and cheated a lot, people here would probably love it
