2024 North American Eclipse

*25% of flights are late in the USA. I guess they are advertising this directly so probably much less likely to be delayed since that would be embarrassing.

The Concorde did it before (and that can actually keep up unlike this flight)

My only question - do they install a glass roof or does the plane fly 90° sideways

Technology better advance to improve our life expectancies a lot, because I need to live to 140+

Whats the Albany expression for “path of totality?”

https://eclipse2024.org/graphics/animations/index.html?map=OH

found this cool tool, you can slide the time back and forth to see the difference between 97% and 100%.

if you go back to the main page of the site you can pick your state.

Yeah fuck Mars

How long would it actually take for us to freeze to death if the sun disappears? Seconds?

It takes eight minutes for light to reach Earth, or so the movie Sunshine told me.

Oh yeah forgot about that timeframe.

The average earth temp is 59. In a week itd be 15 and in a month negative 94.

Google says days to get really cold, and months for the oceans to ice over. But as long as you have energy, you’re fine. You could stay warm underground. The rich would be ok. The rest of us would be wishing it had only taken seconds to freeze to death.

Saturday cloud map. Starting to really believe this will be a good day for my location.

I thought it would be quicker as you have places on earth like in some deserts that have huge differences between day and night and that is only a matter of hours to go from hot to freezing cold.

Makes me think of Snowpiercer, which is currently free on Tubi.

I’ve seen it but it didn’t really grab me. Probably why I don’t watch that many movies. Only recently saw Everything Everywhere All at Once and Oppenheimer. The first had nice moments but was disappointing. The second took me three sessions to get through.

I don’t know how anyone not at least somewhat familiar with the history could follow Oppenheimer. Like, who would know who the guy playing the bongos was? And structuring the narrative around the hearings made it all the more confusing imo.

Grunching the thread but assuming weather conditions will allow its worth driving several hours if needed to get to 100%, the difference between 99% and 100% is astronomical

If you get into the totality zone it’s stunning. For me specifically the second the sun started coming back out was completely surreal. You can look at it during totality and it’s not subtle when that ends is pretty wild how stunningly powerful even .01% of the sun is when it’s a sudden off/on instead of sunrise.
