Just commenting about some dumb people imagining that the terrorists were somehow following the rules of war or something and/or polite and therefore couldn’t have murdered babies, killed civilians, and/or raped women, and the death toll climbing means that the possibility that it was never true in the first place.
Feels like what continues to happen is entirely up to the Israeli government as nobody else is going to step in.
This is effectively what happened in Nagorno-Karabakh but on a scale at least ten times the size based on the population of the area affected.
Like Azerbaijan, no one will stop Israel from doing what it wants which is to either kill or expel the people in the Gaza Strip in the cruelest and most torturous way possible.
So, how did NK end? Well, the siege was called off when Armenia surrendered any claim to the land or independence of the land so long as Armenians were granted full rights by the Azeri government and allowed to leave if they wish. But the future for Armenians that choose to stay in Azerbaijan is probably genocide. Like Israel, Azerbaijan doesn’t give a fuck about the now minority group that stayed in that lands for hundreds of years before it was taken from them. It’s why Israel was happy to supply Azerbaijan with some of the weapons they used against Armenians. They identify.
Yeah, gonna be a genocide within Israel going on.
Beinart is a reliably good commentator on Israel/Palestine issues.
i don’t want to come off as argumentative to your post, but just a few points. armenia didn’t ever have territorial claims to NK, the ethnic population there wanted independence, because it was never going to be armenia. the status quo survived purely because of stationed russian “peace”-keeping force, and otherwise it could have been a steady-bloody conflict for the entirety of ‘90 thru ‘20.
aliev is also a brutal dictator, somewhere between erdogan and putin on the spectrum. the only guy who is not driven by ego is pashinyan, and by the way he may have overstepped his constitutional authority to admit as many people from NK as were possible, but at least he didn’t send thousands to die trying to protect those who chose not to flee. even if he does have that power, it may have cost him any legacy. armenians are desperate for a principled leader, but he wasn’t a strongman some want.
so, there’s a non blue check mark BLM chicago twitter account that posted a graphic of they are with palestine with someone dropping paraglide style. You know the people that dropped in and slaughtered everyone at the music festival.
I hope that’s not a real account.
Aren’t those the same Russians that beheaded 4000 babies
All the reports on this are simply repeating the claims of the IDF, and even that claim is that 40 babies and children were killed, “some of which” were beheaded. So if it happened at all, it probably was one random guy.
Like I hesitate to post this because when you are the “hey maybe this incident is only a 9 on the atrocity scale instead of a 10” guy it doesn’t win you any friends if you’re right and you look like an asshole if you’re wrong… but the news at the moment should be read with the understanding that some of what you are reading is probably IDF propaganda. They would simply not be doing their jobs if this were not true.
We are in the first few days of the fog of war when propaganda is running rampant. I would bet my money against the beheading babies story holding water in the clearer light of actual journalism.
This seems like an odd detail to split hairs over right now. It’s not out of character for Hamas to behead a bunch of kids.
These things are important though as this is exactly the stuff used to dehumanize and therefore ramp up the violence. Who is going to quibble with bombing Gaza off the face of the earth if we all know they are literally beheading babies. It’s Powell’s WMDs.
The more direct comparison is just this.
Ya that is a better example of atrocity propaganda.
they were going to bomb gaza off the face of the earth regardless
I don’t believe “if it happened it was just a random guy” is a sword you want to fall on.
Obviously there’s a swarm of people insisting it’s all fake news cause that’s the age we live in and I don’t know I’m not there.
As the global rally to support Israel ramps up, anyone who pauses to ask if the anti-Hamas stories are even true will simply be shouted down. You can’t say “maybe they didn’t really behead all those babies” without people insisting that you’re a full blown Hamas supporter yourself and probably an anti-Semite, too.
I fear that the narrative is already written in stone in the minds of the general public. The popular discourse around this doesn’t differentiate between Palestinians and Hamas, doesn’t talk about Israel’s public policy failures that led to the vulnerability to a Hamas attack, doesn’t talk about the conditions that allow extremism to thrive and how to best mitigate that. It’s just Palestinians = Hamas = Terrorism = Monsters = Killing Them All Is Justified. This is going to be the Iraq War for the 2020s if the US decides to back land invasions of Gaza. You can’t beat terrorism this way but you also can’t not do it when the public is (understandably) worked into a frothing anger at evident atrocities. It’s a slow motion car crash and we just have to watch it happen.
Multiple OSINT guys have said there’s truly horrific footage that hasn’t been made public. Even if IDF is punching up the details (which, to be fair, they’re certainly capable of), they’re not exaggerating by much.
By the way, I think this is right. But it’s pretty hard to parse the truth vs. the embellished truth. And major military operations with potentially global foreign policy implications probably shouldn’t be launched on the basis of fiery emotional reactions to a mix of truth and propaganda.
