2023 Israel Conflict - Ground Forces Enter Gaza

To be clear, I’m not saying Ukraine = Israel, I’m saying Russia does. They are causing tremendous death and suffering trying to recapture land and displace the people living on it, no? So why hasn’t the United States and allies ever scorned Israel to the magnitude it does Russia and supported Palestinians the way it does Ukrainians? Instead, it seems we support Israel unconditionally

I also think people need to understand that when others refer to a country as bad, they are talking about their governments, not the people living there. I doubt most citizens on either side want this conflict. It is mostly the far right wing of the Israeli government and leaders of Hammas that thrive on the killing of innocents

Lastly, like it or not, non historians and non experts are going to form opinions based on what they do know and have seen. If they’re wrong and you want them to understand what you feel the correct position to hold is, then it’s up to you to provide context and facts they might not be privy to or considering. If your position isn’t worth defending or at least an explanation, then it’s probably no better than anyone else’s imo

I just wonder how you can be so desensitized to everything that you are able to behead a baby. Like this isn’t one random dude we are talking about here. How is that even possible?

Its the natural conclusion of dehumanizing groups of people. When you don’t see the baby as human its very different.

Everyone should take a deep breath, relax, and read up on what Mearsheimer wrote on Israel and Palestine.

I guess man

I know it’s insane but it’s a pattern across inumerable recorded atrocities. Dehumanizing groups leads to unthinkable massacres.

There are many more people of Jewish descent in the United States than of Palestinian descent, even more so in the government. Israel has been seen as one of our biggest allies in the region and as a country we’ve always been indifferent to casualties that aren’t US citizens or white. All of that makes it difficult for the US to do anything but support Israel.

I don’t know what the proper response to the attack was, but it is unlikely we’re going to see it from Israel. I know enough about the region to know both sides are wrong and to hope that the number of atrocities against innocents is minimized, but not to expect them to be.

You are right IMO to question the apparent unconditional support for Israel. We seem to be rushing toward a repeat of the mistakes that followed 9/11.

IMO the Russia/Ukraine conflict is not an instructive comparison. The existence of Hamas is itself enough of a difference. There is no comparable extremist organization in Ukraine that commited comparable provocations. The basic fact pattern is fundamentally different.

I agree with mosdef. This is the end result of dehumanization

My comparison was meant more for where and how the United States and its allies choose to throw our support, more than the actual conditions on the ground. I think we can agree that both sides have committed atrocities. What happens if we didn’t always support Israel unconditionally when it’s them?

Proud I voted for him. Leader of the Arabic Joint Party. This doesn’t mean he’s not fighting against Israel’s government.

Yeah, and when that hate includes those who are in charge, it will never stop.

Yuv, I see you haven’t been :heart:ing posts here, which is your right. However, I would like to see which takes here you like and I think othera would too.

Tbh I’m using this thread as an outlet or blog of sorts. I’m going through a probably pretty standard range of emotions. The stories from Kfar Gaza yesterday and today broke me and I’ve been alternating rage and crying ever since, all while trying to look normal for my kids. Not that other stories weren’t horrific, but my personal connection to the place and decapitated infants was too much.

All this to say is that I don’t pay close attention to the ‘takes’ here, because takes are more inline with long-term thinking (or history), while I can barely make it through the day.

reports out there the lady in that video who was carried off in that truck is still alive

That is pretty hard to believe with that footage

Semi-official reports are now over 1200 deaths and more than 200 hostages taken by Hamas

Fucking hell, man. Just powerless people dead, dying and gonna die.

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant says Israel is moving to a “full offense” against the Gaza Strip, as sporadic clashes with Hamas terrorists in southern Israel continue for a fourth day.

“I have released all the restraints, we have [regained] control of the area, and we are moving to a full offense,” Gallant says to troops on the Gaza border.

“You will have the ability to change the reality here. You have seen the prices [being paid], and you will get to see the change. Hamas wanted a change in Gaza, it will change 180 degrees from what it thought,” Gallant says.

“They will regret this moment, Gaza will never return to what it was,” he continues.

“Whoever comes to decapitate, murder women, Holocaust survivors — we will eliminate him with all our might, and without compromise,” Gallant adds.

I keep seeing these battling reports over whether the terrorists were nice guys who were polite and other ones talking how how they raped women, burned babies etc and I’m discounting the “the terrorists on the whole were polite and nice” with the 1200 deaths. I’m sure there’s a lot of variability, maybe some were nice or whatever, but on the whole you don’t kill 1200 people while also being nice and polite.

The raping women stuff seems a bit off just because it was based on seeing blood on a women’s pants which could be just blood from someone else, unfortunately but the whole “don’t believe what you hear because here’s a video of someone being nice to a Jewish grandma hostage” is silly.

I don’t know what the fuck this post is.
