2023 Israel Conflict - Ground Forces Enter Gaza

Technical problems thread is the other way pls (excise pls mods). Israel having their 9/11 and dudes be worried their tracking bell gone AWOL

Man, hearing that a government is sending SMS messages to people telling them that they are about to drop a bomb on their building and to please head outside real quick is pretty wild and not something I can quite get my head around. War in the Internet age is wild stuff. Bleh.

Numbers from the Kibbutzim starting to come out. 108 bodies in Beā€™eri, which only has 500 or so active population at best. Numbers in Kfar Gaza (which my dad was among its founders and sadly lost a lot of old friends there on Saturady) will be similar if not worse.

The mood in Israel calls for a total annhilation of Gaza. I honestly donā€™t know how this ends but this is the most heartbroken iā€™ve ever been.

Some? Like at least 40-50%. The Republicans who care most about Israel are evangelicals, and about 40% of the Republican coalition is evangelicals.

Thatā€™s the point I donā€™t understand. Surely Hamas had to know that would be the response.

Wishing you the best.

Iā€™m pretty oblivious, mostly on purpose, on the full details because both sides have been terrible since Rabin, but it seems clear that the Gaza situation is only sustainable with serious repression which doesnā€™t seem like a long term solution.

Problem is that the Israeli government is the best of the relevant actors and the Israeli government is fucking terrible. Itā€™s like trying to find a solution between a theocracy, a kleptocracy, and a military dictatorship. I donā€™t pay too much attention because I have no idea what a solution looks like. (Anyway, didnā€™t Jared fix this mess?)

I know i post a lot and sometimes get into useless arguments so it get lost, but I posted many times that one of Israelā€™s worst crimes is allowing Hamas to grow as a way to weaken Fatah.

Even the unileteral withdrawl from Gaza, which was supported by the zionist left, was a terrible plan that allowed this to happen.

Feels like just as in the US with Trump, though, Bibi wonā€™t get any actual blame and will still command massive support, right? In other words it doesnā€™t really matter.

Bibi has very little support to begin with. Heā€™s reliant on two groups (Ultra orthodox and the extreme right) that are unpopular with his own voters. He faced a huge amount of protest.

Unless he pulls off a miraculous win that Iā€™m not even sure what that might be (the head of mohammad deif on parade maybe), I donā€™t think heā€™s coming out of this. Israeli civilians were executed in the hundreds while the army was guarding settlers in the West Bank. This isnā€™t anything anyone had to deal with before.

Something that Iā€™ve seen on another discussion in a neighbouring forum -

Hamas wasnā€™t elected to Gaza because of dispair. They were elected as winners after the Israeli disengagement from Gaza. 21 Settlements were evacuated. While I have my criticism on the plan, it was viewed as the ultimate win by Gazans themselves and Hamas took credit for it. Winning the elections there started a civil war with Fatah. There seems to be some ill informed ideas on how Hamas came to power there.

A few questions. These arenā€™t loaded in any way Iā€™m genuinely curious about the answers. What good does annihilating Gaza do? What comes next should that happen? You seem pretty sure Bibi will not survive this situation. What exactly would that look like? Some kind of special election? A coup? Assasination? If Bibi is so unpopular how did he survive the last election? Election fraud?

No no, Iā€™m not sure of anything. My thinking is that heā€™s not gonna make it after the dust settles and the country mourns. All it takes is 5 out of 64 of his coalition to vote against the government and weā€™ll go to elections. It doesnā€™t have to be that dramatic.

Well, if they kill everybody, they wonā€™t have to worry about the roaches launching rockets. At least from Gaza.

The comments on Reddit are disgusting. Tons of gleeful celebrations and glib comments over civilians getting bombed. They donā€™t even care if it hits Hamas terrorists, they just want people to die. Anyone questioning the collective punishment of civilians gets accused of being a ā€œterrorist sympathizer.ā€ Itā€™s like a time travel back to 2003 with the invasion of Iraq.

Revenge i suppose? Imagine how the US population would act if 9/11 was 20x fold and done by Mexico.

edit - this isnā€™t a sign of support for annihilating Gaza, just explaining the mindset here.

No doubt. You are absolutely correct on the response being even more racheted up had Mexico done 9/11.

Is it too CT to wonder if Trump passed on some intelligence about Israel to Russia and Russia passed this along to Iran with the desire that they give it to Hamas to instigate something that takes American attention away from Ukraine?

yes, everything does not revolve around the US
