Republicans needed a minimum number of votes in order to elect their Speaker.
Normally, this requires extension negotiations and parlays in advance. If a party has a majority or supermajority, they often know who will be Speaker before they are elected. The narrower the majority, the more negotiating is needed to secure votes.
In this case, Republicans truly believed there would a red wave complementing the number of House GOP. They are now having the negotiations on the House floor that they should have had leading into the midterms.
