Yes, its very real. As @microbet pointed out above, targeted and manipulative advertising is at least a century old. But a century ago we didn’t carry around data harvesting devices to transfer vast amounts to data to a central manipulator who would then send us back targeted advertising to our addictive bleep bloop screens we look at for hours every day.
Like other addictions the thresholds for serious concern are unclear. Shopping addiction for many people is probably a bit like caffeine addiction, it does some damage but usually not enough to really throw someone’s life off course. But on the other hand we live in a society with widespread stress over financial problems.
By 2032 you will be able to have Walmart employees come to your home and do all manner of chores for you, they can load your dishwasher and mow your lawn, maybe plant some and harvest some cotton, don’t worry they like it that’s why they’re singing all the time while they work. We’re trying to Make America Great Again here.
