2022 LC Thread—New Year, New Thread

Ssspp rules.

Yeah this happened the other day. I got to hear a discussion where people debated the race of the clerk at the convenience store being Arab or Mexican. (Guy was clearly middle eastern descent).

I don’t recall knowing people who had lice when I was a kid, but it seemed like every kid got them at my kids’ elementary school. Maybe it’s just girls (people with longer hair). Everyone in my family got it but me.

We were lousy with lice over here, between both kids we had them half a dozen times at least. My shaved head renders me immune, as the lice can find no purchase.

I’m oversharing, but one of my kids was so amazingly paranoid and upset about lice that one time we paid a professional lice checker to come check her out on Christmas Day. She did not have lice that time.

I was a kid in the 80s in Nova Scotia and our class routinely had lice outbreaks.

I remember summer camp being lice Russian roulette. That place was a seething Petri dish of childhood disease.

We got pretty good at diagnosing lice infestation, but would outsource the treatment and removal. There’s a salon near us called Lice Schmice that does in- and out-calls. Also our kids’ schools would automatically check all the kids once there was a reported case.

I think we were good too (and were right in this case), but the kid was so freaked out we had a pro come in just that once. I think we handled the cases that did come up with the combs and the shampoo and even soaking hair in vegetable oil or something. If I’m vague on the details, it’s because it was a long time ago, and, yeah, my wife did most of that.

I sorta like things like picking nits, but I think that was before I admitted to needing reading glasses and I wasn’t as good at it as I could have been.

The lice sharps look for hairy, obese, diabetic, low-testosterone old men.

Off the vent and awake today in his normal mental state. I’m happy.

I just noticed the ump pointing at the hitter followed by the pitcher throwing his glove down and charging and figured he said something about his mom or sister. Personally, I would have stayed on the mound and muttered something about taking solace knowing one day he’d do that to someone who would make his helmet pop off his his head like that. Can’t condone the attack, but don’t feel bad for the hitter either.
Dude should have kept his mouth shut.

Speaking of dudes who should shut up.

A&M says no, he’s not. Not registered. He doesn’t seem to want to go to school so much as he wants people to think he’s going.

Liberty would take him no questions asked

The amount of pearl clutching over anecdotal evidence in this article is absurd. If there’s actually a problem with solutions I didn’t learn much about either.

Liberty would invite him to be a professor.

In general I find these articles that are structured as “writer interviews author about their book, article is transcription of Qs and As” tends to be a poor form of communication. Vox does this a lot and yeah you don’t really get a coherent story that hangs together.

I find that the main points are things that really only jump out if you already know something about urban planning and cycling/pedestrian misery in cities designed for cars. The actual problem is rising numbers of pedestrian deaths from collisions with cars, and the solutions are hinted at in that a lot of this is just bad urban planning. Cities are designed to move cars quickly, even in areas where people are trying to use the same streets/roads for walking or biking, and that is a recipe for dead pedestrians and cyclists. Cities are designed by and for richer people more likely to want to drive everywhere, and real people and their families pay the price for that luxury.

This might be weird but I hate overhearing others talk about politics even when I completely agree with them.
