2022 LC Thread—New Year, New Thread

The intent of the author does not constrain the meaning of the text.

I think they were intended to be greedy capitalists, but ignorant design of their physical appearance allowed for reasonable charges of antisemitism. And using cartoonish space Jews to represent capitalism takes away from any attempt to critique capitalism.

You mean like being short and balding and having big ears and a funny nose? Like, Star Trek was anti-capitalist well before TNG.

I kind of agree, but the only thing I’m not clear on is how responsible Rowling is for what the goblins look like on screen. I don’t remember how much detail she went into when describing their physical features in the books, but I imagine that someone could have come up with an on screen goblin that looked quite different from what they went with.

On the other hand, if Rowling described the facial features of goblins precisely and that is exactly what we got on screen, then I’d say guilty as charged.

In all honesty, I haven’t read the Harry Potter books, but it was my understanding that the goblin descriptions were in the books. I might be mistaken, and anyone is welcome to prove me wrong. But I’ve been thinking JK tied together Jewish physical descriptions with Jewish employment stereotypes.

Meanwhile, I feel like the anti-Semitic feelings about the Ferengi are, like, maybe a product of the greedy, conniving Jew stereotype being baked into our culture, and creating the Ferengi along those lines is perhaps lazy writing but without the Jewish likeness isn’t as obviously anti-Semitic. Like, maybe anti-Semitism is pervasive, and creating a race of conniving businessmen can feel like a natural stereotype to leverage even if the creator isn’t explicitly thinking Jews. And also, the presence of the stereotype in our culture can make people think Jews even if the creator was just going for conniving buisnessmen. But that’s still a step removed from hook-nosed goblins running the underground banks conniving to hoodwink the white heroes.

So, bottom line, I think creating a race of anything who happen to all be conniving businesspeople is going to be problematic given the racism and stereotypes that we have already that basically all suck, but so is ascribing any race-wide aspects to any race, fictional or otherwise. Like, even if orcs don’t necessarily map neatly to a human racial stereotype (and they could easily be seen as Black), the very notion of making a race with so many shared characteristics is likely to turn bad perhaps by aligning with common racial stereotypes but at least by reinforcing the notion that the fictional construct that is race is deterministic for shit like career choice or trustworthiness.

That’s true but not consistently. The Harry Mudd episodes, The Trouble with Tribbles, and A Piece of the Action episodes come to mind. This ending is one of my very favorite STOS scenes.

That congress has just allowed stuff to pass into the public domain the past couple of years has been genuinely shocking. I would have bet a lot that it would never happen. Will be hilarious when they write and pass new copyright legislation over a weekend this November or what have you.

Mickey runs good.

1979: Democratic House and Senate
1998: Democratic House and Senate
2023: Democratic House and Senate

Didn’t Winnie the Pooh just get the copyright axe?

so why does this throw out the case instead of safely assuming they all lied and go from there.

isn’t everyone in UP of the opinion that they’re going to lose both house and senate in 2022?

Oops. Yeah, everyone (not just here) says Ds are toast. But I meant

2022: Democratic House and Senate

So better get that Mickey update done this year.

Now I have to consider that maybe Biden’s speech today wasn’t as good as I thought.

I don’t think it’s a sure thing.

Do you have an estimate of most likely outcome?

Based on this at 538 I’m guessing ~30 seat loss in the House unless Biden’s net approval comes up.

So you’re saying there’s a chance?!?

Are you saying that Republicans have an idiot-proof path to 2022?
