Wow. Always an out. Good thing I can’t draw.
I think they pretty much just have to show up.
Yea but the shirtcocking is still owned by Disney.
I am finally buying a new car, mostly because the used market is so nuts right now. I can sell my 2013 Mazda 3 for close to 50% what I paid for it! It’s crazy.
That said, I have to wait 2 months at least to get a new one on back order.
Used car prices are up 40% in a year.
Does anyone know if the semiconductor problem predated the pandemic?
My understanding is 1) car companies stopped ordering chips at the beginning of the pandemic because no one was driving 2) computer/electronics manufacturers jumped to take their stop in line due to high demand for computers, monitors, video games, etc. resulting from the shift to work from home 3) car manufacturers were like oh shit, the lower demand was super temporary, we actually need all those chips 4) chip manufacturers were like sorry, they are spoken for, will have to get in the back of the line.
And for some reason huge percentage of worldwide chips are made in Taiwan.
The chip shortages are almost all because of Chinese production facilities either being shut down because of COVID or other pandemic related issues like not being able to operate because of lack of electricity. Pretty much every company was running on a just-in-time model where chips were delivered right before they ran out and it’s biting everyone in the ass as we wait for the fabrication plants to get back up to speed.
Part of the reason it took a while to manifest was the semiconductor industry had a weak year in 2019 so there was a decent chunk of material left over at various distributors because some of these parts have year+ lead times but that started to dry up last summer and now everybody’s fighting for the same limited supply of chips.
Millennium copyright act passed unanimously lol
Wiki says it was by voice vote in the House and by consent in the Senate. That’s not the same thing as a unanimous vote since individual votes weren’t recorded. But just like the congresspeople who might have voted against it, I concede the point. The rich will get their way.
taiwan invested very heavily into semiconductor manufacturing years ago. in some years, almost 90% were made there.
Congrats on atrupar finally surpassing Suzzer99 in most number of posts in Unstuck history.
Old fabs were shut down in the US and new ones weren’t built because of higher costs, restrictive environmental regulations, and an entitled, overpaid workforce. Which is just to say that the people who decide such things saw it was easier and more profitable to go offshore.
they didn’t proactively venture to offshore manufacturing, although they were using it for other simpler tasks. then taiwan made a huge bet and hit.
also taiwan environmental regulations are stronger than in the US.
they didn’t proactively venture to offshore manufacturing,
Maybe I’m remembering wrong but it’s certainly the case that Intel, for instance, invested in fabs outside the US so that now half their facilities are in places like Ireland and China. Micron gave up on planned facilities in Utah and Idaho and the majority of their operations are also now international. I haven’t followed closely in some time but I’d be surprised if the story were not similar for all the big US semiconductor manufacturers. It happened over decades, alongside the expansion of TMSC.
taiwan environmental regulations are stronger than in the US.
How long has that been true though? Circumstances are tipping back the other way, and TSMC is now building next gen plants here, despite the supposed dearth of American talent and other claimed disadvantages of doing so. They aren’t doing it out of the kindness of their hearts.
so I am assuming anyone here who owns a house is constantly getting texts and calls from dipshits who want to buy it? I get these too, BUT, for some reason they’re all asking me about my MOTHER’s house. How far along could I possibly get before these shitbags figure out I don’t own the house? How much of their time can I waste?
Not a single one.
The housing market is hyper localized and often even more segmented by type.
Holy shit my piece of shit 2016 Ford Escapes are going for nearly 20K near me woth 100K miles
Yep. It’s pure bananas what used cars are going for. I will be able to sell my 8 year old one for like $10k and buy new for $30ish. Makes little sense.
Thats kinda what Im thinking. An upgrade from a 2016 Ford escape with 75K miles to a 2021 Nissan Rogue would be like, 8K dollars. Insanity.
