Hard to believe that people argue things they don’t actually believe in order to beat their enemy.
Most of the last GE here was fought on whether or not Corbyn was an anti-Semite. Obviously he wasn’t but mud thrown by the media has a habit of sticking, and many of his accusers were from the far-right who couldn’t care less whether someone’s anti-Semitic.
Ketchup is a vegetable. So are potatoes. The government says eat 5-10 servings of vegetables per day. So I eat french fries 5 times a day. Healthy eating is easy.
i agree with your sentiment, but orban isn’t worried about this. he can live in comfort in his own country if he’s deposed right now. putin/lukashenko/nazarbayev may easily lose all their riches, will probably be a focus for trying in some court.
not that it wouldn’t have happened a year ago or that others won’t do the same, but that specific moron isn’t an official anymore. he’ll probably be one again in a year or so
Seems like it’s the bank goblins by a country mile. Tolkein’s dwarves and the Nibelungen may be greedy, but they aren’t bankers or in stereotypically Jewish professions like media or business. They’re miners earning an honest living. Ferengi are most definitely conniving businessmen, but they’re given huge pointy ears as their dominant physical trait, and to a lesser degree, broad rather than rounded noses. Giving a race who is known for nothing but being specifically bankers noses that are specifically rounded seems the most anti-Semitic.
At the time I honestly never connected the Ferengi with anti-Semitic tropes in the 90’s-2000’s, but it’s hard to unsee that as an adult. I’m a big Trek nerd, but the series does have a lot of blind spots.
I’m tempted to grade this on a scale based on Potter being from the 00’s, TNG being in the 80’s and LotR being a century ago and just say Rowling was the worst.
I don’t really know the others that well but the goblins aren’t really negative creatures at all in potterverse. They’re a suppressed minority more than anything else
also rowling did it decades after all the other examples, when this shit has already been discussed and everyone was told to knock it off for 20 years.
Why can’t the Ferengi be a criticism of capitalism that made (presumably non-malicious and perhaps unintentional) use of anti-Semitic tropes but would have been more effective without such a distraction?
Mel Brooks is the undisputed champion of portraying Jews in space.
