enough of this dumb elvis derail, let’s talk about something important.
I’ve never intentionally listened to an Elvis song, but he basically invented rock ‘n’ roll by combining black musical traditions, transgressive-but-not-too-transgressive sexuality, and mass media.
I know that in the 90s and early aughts, some of the chain film processors had procedures in place specifically to flag and review prints with a lot of flesh tones. Always was a bad idea to send those out, even when legal. At best, you could expect that extra prints would be generated for the managers personal collection.
My guess is that you could send these out to a small shop and just have the negatives set (without prints) so that you could review them yourself. Also, I imagine that this still shouldn’t be too big a deal to do it at home if you are really worried. But don’t send these to Walmart.
@clovis8’s comments suggest that he prefers singer-songwriter types (Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Bruce Springsteen) over “performers”. This is certainly valid, and I also personally would consider your Bob Dylan types to be “better artists” than Elvis. But I also appreciate Elvis’s pretty unique vocal and personal stylings. Another thing I love about Elvis is the passion of the performance. In sports parlance, that dude Left It All On The Field. Did he write songs like Bob Dylan? No. Did he write music like Prince? No. But he did his thing - pure showmanship and spectacle - as good as just about anybody.
Anyway, I have said it before and I’ll say it again because I love to repeat myself ad nauseum. I don’t like to hate on anyone’s music. Music is one of only a handful of things that are truly universal human passions. This is probably too melodramatic, but hating someone’s music always feels to me like hating the way they love. Just love that people have music to love. It’s one of the best parts of humanity. There’s 70 million songs on Spotify, if you don’t like one don’t fuss over it, just listen to something else.
Seems weird to be having this Elvis discussion on the age of streaming music. I just checked Spotify and they have a bunch of Elvis tracks with over 100 million listens. “Can’t help falling in love” is about to hit the half billion mark. He is crushing Joni Mitchell and Stompin’ Tom Conners.
Yeah it’s fine to think that singer-songwriters are “better” “artists” but to deny Elvis’ immense vocal talent because he didn’t write his own songs is lol. Like, did you know that Pavarotti didn’t write his own operas? What a talentless hack!
To be fair, I don’t think that has actually been argued. I just think that he just doesn’t like the songs, period.
Another interesting observation re: The King; Townes Van Zandt is the epitome of the artistically high minded singer-songwriter and he started playing guitar as a teenager because he saw Elvis on TV. With no Elvis (CANCEL CULTURE RUN AMOK!) there is no Townes Van Zandt.
Well, Townes WAS high, that’s for sure.
Hated Beavis and Butt-Head, but I liked Daria.
Clovis says “his actual talent was minor.”
I knew it!
well at least anti-grammar
Pro-Palestine and anti-Semite are not the same thing and it’s bullshit that they’ve ever been linked together.
We live in a bullshit world.
is that an israeli government official? i believe so, and that just means we are so much more fucked than i thought.
Israeli ambassador to the UN I believe.
don’t we have already have secretary of the ocean, the fruit-growing comptroller, and the administrator of hanging out?
epa, usda, and hhs metaphors obv
This is the kind of thing that freaks Putin/Orban/Lukashenko out. Putin’s autocratic views were formed in part by witnessing the disintegration of the USSR and East Germany. He was also spooked by what happened to his boy Yanukovych in Ukraine.
