I think this qualifies. Great song.

Here we are. She was pretty big in Germany for several years; one of the main faces of what they called the German new wave.

Not into the genre but this song goes hard and is kind of a banger.

But can a semi obscure but highly influential band be a one hit wonder? Probably not. Might get punched calling JD a one hit wonder in proper company.

Shouldn’t it also be a hit? Never heard that before.

That was barely a hit, still Joy Division attained legendary status. Does not qualify imo.

Flagpole sitta definitely a hit in the indi/pop space. Think it’s a good example. Would be nice to have a metric like radio plays. Maybe Spotify plays is an okish substitute, but the “best” one hit wonders probably have highest density of plays in a particular time period, like the macarana or whatever shit Tiny Tim sang.

Freakonomics did an entire podcast on one hit wonders and the lead singer of Harvey Danger was the main guest, so I’d say they qualify.

Songs by foreign bands not in English are weird. It’s entirely possible they have multiple hits and best selling albums in their home country but only one song actually broke through in the US (Nena, Psy, etc.). Many one hit wonders may be from a genre that doesn’t get played by traditional pop/rock sources. They can have big followings and much success in their genre, but only had one song really break through into hit classification. For Example:

It’s currently playing ~every other commercial break during NFL games on a Taco Bell ad.

How old are you and what country are you in? That seems impossible.

Little Miss can’t be wrong was a legitimate hit.
