Working out / health and fitness

You should check out the wegovy website. Looks like you can get a coupon for $500 off per month if you’re not covered, but there is some fine print to go through, which I didn’t.

If you’re running anywhere near a 2kcal deficit, I don’t think the drugs are going to make a difference. I also think if you’re looking at the long run it’s a bad idea.

Once you get to your end goal, maintenance is going to be about 2K/day for you. So part of your goal should be to figure out a 2Kcal/day diet plan that you can actually follow for the rest of your life. As you say, 2K is a good amount to work with, so it really shouldn’t be that hard.

I’m making the assumption that you’ve only just started trying. If you’re made multiple attempts to comply with a 2K/day diet and failed, then sure, consider the drugs.

Thanks! Money is not the main motivator here, but since I’m a professional gambler it seemed like a great way to add some $EV and write off some of the expenses related to the diet/exercise.

I’ll check that out, thanks!

Yeah, I’ve tried in the past but not since solving my sleep issues, which completely ended my sugar cravings. That’s going to make it so much easier. Right now I’m aiming for 400 calories or less per meal, eating 3-4 meals (4 on lift days, 3 most others), and then having 1-2 snacks that are mostly fruit/vegetables. It’s been manageable so I’m sure adding 200-400 calories would make it very sustainable.

I’m also not sure what my maintenance level will end up being. My hope is to cut until I’m at a healthy weight and relatively happy with my appearance, then if it’s fall/winter, bulk and try to add some muscle. The long-term goal is to be around 12-14% bodyfat, and be around 170-180 pounds. I’m guessing that’s going to mean cutting until I’m 155-165 (probably going to take me until the end of 2023), then adding 15-25 pounds of muscle over a period of maybe 2-3 years, either bulking while eating clean or bulking with a less clean diet between Sept and February and cutting in March/April.

Basically I hate cardio and I enjoy lifting, so the goal is to get to a healthy weight that looks good that I can maintain while lifting 2-3 times a week, hopefully consuming more like 2,300 to 2,500 calories.

But that’s all way in the future, for now it’s just a day/week/month at a time while I’m losing weight.

If $$ isn’t the main motivation I’d say be careful feeling like you have to keep these big deficits up for 7 months, which could lead to you being miserable and then saying fuck it once the 7 months are up. Making permanent lifestyle changes should be the real end goal, not losing X pounds in Y months.

I had a buddy drop 50 pounds for his wedding. 4 or 5 months later it was all back…

Yeah, I won’t allow myself to be miserable for 7 months. Like that’s why I’m going high activity and keeping my calorie intake reasonable. When I was younger, I’d try to do like 800-1200 calories a day. That was miserable. I can eat four healthy meals and some fruits and veggies as a snack and be in the 1800 calorie range.

Yes yes of course. Going to drink a bunch of beer and not think about any marathon plans for a while.

@spidercrab Nice, the Pfitzinger book is on everybody’s rushmore for training plan books, I’ve never read the Hanson but I know people like it. Another rushmore marathon book is whatever Daniels’s last one was. Fwiw I think Pfitzinger’s 18/55 plan might really suit you

btw if you like SoCal, the Carlsbad 5000 is way more fun & memorable than whatever local 5K on main street, in part because Carlsbad is one of the fastest fair 5K courses in the world—people used to set the 5K road world record there all the time. Race is on April 2nd next year, just saying

my uncle gets a spooky look when he starts talking about how much gout hurts; I try not to talk to him about it because it means in five minutes I’m gonna be hearing his kidney stone story again, but gout sounds awful, sorry dude. Ugh I just google imaged GOUT ANKLE and in one it looks like a medium-sized baby is crowning out the guy’s tibia

Figured I’d update since it’s been a little over a week. I’m now on Day 16, not having trouble sticking to ~1800 calories. A couple days I’ve had to make sure to eat extra to hit it because I wasn’t hungry, a couple I’ve been (manageably) hungry at night. I should probably just not force myself when I’m not hungry and eat a little extra when I am and make sure the averages stay ~1800.

I’ve dropped another 4.2 pounds, so I’m at 10.2 pounds in 16 days. I can also tell I’ve added muscle to my traps and arms, and probably to my chest. I either added some to my legs or dropped fat and tightened them up, the muscles feel more defined. So in my mind I’m thinking it’s probably more like 11-12 pounds of fat that I’ve lost.

Of course the bet is based on total weight loss, so I’ll have to keep that in mind and if the weight plateaus switch to more cardio and mix up the weight lifting routine to be more strength-oriented and less hypertrophy-oriented. Right now I’m doing a mix of both.

I got my streak and took three rest days because I was a little worn down. Since then I’ve lifted Fri, Sun, Mon, Wed for lifting. I haven’t started adding in the cardio, but it’s going to start in the next day or two.

I’m hoping to get far enough ahead of pace that I feel comfortable indulging on Thanksgiving. I also plan to hit the weights HARD on Thanksgiving morning, doing 1.5x-2x my normal amount of work. I figure if I do that and make sure to load up on turkey when I go for seconds, I can’t be doing too much damage.

That should get me to 4,200-4,500 calories burned for the day, so I may even manage to run a deficit on Thanksgiving! But mac and cheese and stuffing are my favorites, so it’s not all going to be lean turkey meat.

Joined a gym. (I’ve been lifting at home previously)

Hit the gym. First squat just with the bar. crack shorts split in the ass on my first rep.

Lol.

I sneak into a corner and do 20 minutes on a bike erg then head home.

Not my most successful gym outing

Too bad you weren’t filming your form. Viral video stuff.

At least it didn’t happen when you were squatting heavy and grunting or something. “Arrrrghhh!!!” (everyone looks) [split]

~10 lbs now. About to hit my first goal.

If I had to choose between this and death I’d snapcall a cyanide capsule. Are those Luminette glasses one of the devices you own? This picture creeps me the fuck out. Srsly looks like someone you could only meet in Zuck’s Metaverse.

No, I’ve got a pair of blue blockers (Swanwicks), a DayLight, and a Sperti Lamp. Those are the only major devices. I use the Sperti 3 mins every 2-3 days, the DayLight 30 minutes on cloudy mornings (while doing other things), and the blue blockers 1-2 hours at night while winding down.

It’s pretty manageable for the benefits.

I did hear about some awesome glasses in development that you can program to dose the perfect amount/color of light throughout the day that look like normal eyeglasses. I think they’re 1-2 years away.

Some folks on the N24 sub are wearing these things for 7-8 hours per day. It’s horrifying. At first I thought that picture I linked was an obvious photoshop but it’s not. They really do look that uncanny valley. It’s also an excuse to have IRL laser eyes.
