Me too, especially because they always use my body for the “before” illustrations.
Video guy never said “I want to pump you up” even though it seemed like he really wanted to.
That would have been the icing on the cake for sure.
Anyone have a recommendation for a pullup bar ? I can’t use one that attaches to a doorframe or wall due to the unique construction of the house I live in. Probably need a stand-alone bar. There are so many out there. Can’t tell what is good and what is junk.

I have this one. I like it because it folds away and im short on space.
There’s others referred to as a power tower. You can use it for dips and other stuff as well. Probably depends how much spare space you have.
Thanks. Looks ideal. I’ll see if I can find this in Japan.
Its a lot taller than it looks. Check the dimensions first.
Semi grunch, picked this off amazon for ~$425 with the extended warranty and it showed up today. Was together in under 30 minutes and did my first session. Was do much less impact than running and pretty relaxing. Sure I’ll probably be pretty sore in a few days but feeling pretty in love with it so far. Next want to get an entry level bench and try to build some chesticles before summer. (Marcy NS-6070RW water row machine)
I love rowing and have done a lot. Fire any questions here if you have them.
I’m a total noob. Hit me with any suggestions or tips you might have. Current plan is to put the water in there to the max and try to get to 30 minutes of rowing every other day, maybe mix some running in if I’m not feeling it or want a mix up. I got up to 15 minutes brisk jog but kind of scared cause I rolled my ankle years back in Portugal when I ‘tried to go pro’ and scared to hurt my feet any more. (Also broke some toes a few times but its mostly the ankle that scares me, that shit HURTS, don’t wish it on anyone.) My goals are pretty typical, being healthier is a plus but mostly want to be more attractive and confident. FWIW, standard skinny, nerdy computer dude who can do like 30 pushups at a time.
Im not familiar with the rowing machine you have. Most gyms use a concept2.
Does it give you speed/effort/distance metrics?
General advice would be to do a mix of some steady state (longer row, same pace) with some intervals for time or distance.
Max of 3 hard sessions a week.
Track whatever metrics it does give you closely, and work towards slow and steady improvement each session/week.
Thanks for the advice. I did about 24 minutes today if one discounts by a minute screwing with music and the distance meter. Got a nice baby sweat going and plenty of room for more. Only did 11 minutes on Monday because I was afraid I might be really sore afterwards be there luckily that did not materialize. Making sure to get back in the habit of doing some back yoga so that I have a better chance of not getting too sore. Definitely was looking forward to this all day.
How loud is this rowing machine while in use?
Loud enough that you won’t be able to hear everything said on a stream on medium volume but can hear music fine. It’s not loud really. If you have a roommate in the next room trying to sleep they would surely be pissed though.
Nice! Over time you will want to check your technique.
From the start (you closest to the wheel) you should extend your legs, then your back/hips and only your arms at the end.
Hard for me to explain, but plenty of tips and videos on google on good rowing machine technique.
A few minor tweaks and you will likely see your speed increase significantly
Tried to practice a bit better form today and went the full 30 minutes. 540 strokes 4468 meters so +33% with only 17% more time. I noticed the meter gauge rips if you really pull the wheel hard at the end of row. Anywho pleased with the performance even if I did take a couple days off. I for sure needed the exercise after the Easter lunch. This outta-body is hilarious and need to get this innertube out of my body.
I didn’t want to get on the subway today so I walked home 15km :) my feet hurt.
Retitled the thread to make it more general in post-COVID times. I’m back in the gym regularly and it feels fucking amazing. In a weird way, I think I needed the act of leaving my house and going to a different location to help make the habit stick. That probably has implications for my life goal of building out a lifting studio in my future home…
I’m having a crappy time with workouts, I’ve got pain in my right shoulder that pretty clearly presents as a rotator cuff problem. The pain is mild and there’s no loss of strength but I’m probably stuck with it until I can get in for some medical imaging. Oh well at least it’s good biking weather now. I’ll do a ton more cardio for a while I guess.
A bottle of shampoo fell on my second toe this morning and now it hurts to walk. This is bullshit.
