I stood next to two members of The Kids in The Hall at a The New Pornographers concert at the Burton Cummings theater once, which is the most Canadian sentence I can muster.
Hire me and Iāll look into it and write you a memo. Or just fire her and donāt tell her why. Make sure thereās no paper trail.
Iām guessing you donāt understand how labour laws work. You canāt just fire someone without cause and certainly not for having different religious or political views.
You of course donāt want a world where you could!
Looking for some insight on anyone that has experienced similar feelings. My life is great; I have a good job, good wife, good dog, good friends, and I honestly cannot complain about anything. Now that my life is together I am having a hard time shaking the feeling that something bad is going to happen; ieā¦ lose my job (even though itās stable) get sick ectā¦ Iām about to turn 30. I spent most of my 20ās stressing about being successful. Iām there mostly, but I just canāt seem to calm my mind. Anyone experience anything similar?
Hello riddle, thank you for this question. I wonder the same thing sometimes. I have a couple of ideasā¦
One is that we become addicted to the adrenaline and cortisolāthink of this as an addiction to excitement, high engagement, stimulationāso part of what we are feeling once things settle down is a kind of withdrawal. Our brains believe on a level of experience and a kind of dependence that we need to remain in a state of crisis in order to survive. And so it manifests feelings and thoughts to drive us into that state of crisis. To convince us we are in a crisis already, which can in itself lead to an actual crisis.
The nature of our brainās plasticity means that we can reshape our natural state from crisis-driven to serenity, but habits are competitive with new behavior. Your brain will fight while it has the option to bring you back to what it knows.
I have found in part that if I give myself time in a good life and choose to engage a little more each day with what makes my life good, the anxiety gets a little less each day, like the fading addiction for a cigarette.
The Apple ecosystem sucks so bad. I tried to buy an iphone headphone + charger thingy off Amazon. There are like 100 brands to choose from, none of them look official. I deliberately picked not the cheapest one that had good reviews. Device not supported.
This is the description:
(Apple MFi Certified)3.5mm Headphone Adapter for iPhone Splitter Jack Earphone Cable,2 in 1 Headphone Audio & Charger Compatible for iPhone 11/11 Pro/X/XR/XS/8 7,Support Calling & Music Control iOS 13
Just GFY Amazon.
Do I literally have to buy this shit directly from Apple?
This resonates a ton with me and I feel like you are on to something. Itās a similar issue to when I stopped playing poker semiprofessionally. I couldnāt enjoy normal fun experiences as much because there was no adrenaline. Finding calmness and contentness is tough for me. Thanks for the well written answer.
I had the exact same issue a few years ago. A friend introduced me to mindfulness meditation and it has changed my life. That sounds hyperbolic but it really has. Itās reduced my worry, anxiety and stress so much and made me generally so much happier and more content.
It doesnāt eliminate thoughts like you mention. It just drastically reduces their half-life.
Did you use a program or app to get started? Iām willing to give it a shot, but am not really that familiar with it.
You Canadians are adorable with your workersā rights.
There are certainly exceptions, but at-will employment is the law in all 50 states.
Really? You can fire someone at any time for any reason no matter how long they have worked for you?
Yep.
More or less; yup.
I used an app called Calm at first. I now use a similar one by Sam Harris called Waking Up.
Also read a book called 10% happier.
(everyone can save their Harris commentary. Iām not interested).
Jesus Christ America is a dystopian hellscape. Why do any of you live there?
Various states have various Protections. In California you cannot be fired for religion. I donāt know where this case is, but religion may be a federally protected class too. The person fired would be making the argument that they were fired for their religion. The employer would argue that they were being fired for not doing their job which you can fire someone for at will.
Itās actually difficult to fire someone for cause here. It takes significant paperwork evidence over a long period of time.
You can lay someone off without cause but must provide a severance which ranges from a few weeks to up to a year pay depending on their length of employment.
Pot committed at this point.
I was born here.
