Jeff Foxworthy was A. never really white trash and B. never really funny.
I mean, an actual white trash guy telling jokes about white trash people still isn’t punching down, right? It’s not really the same vibe as a straight cis dude mocking transgender people or sexual abuse victims.
I agree! I’m saying that Netflix offered Dave $60 million dollars. An insane amount of money. Some of his “new” material was lazy, bad or offensive. There are so few comedy specials where everything kills. Especially one you’re paying tens of millions up front for.
You can assert “punching down isn’t funny” all you want but it won’t make it true. Hannah Gadsby has never said anything as funny as an innocently sleeping cat falling off of a television.
If you’re going to make fun of trans people CJ is the right target. It’s possible to be trans, grossly overprivileged, and a terrible person all at the same time… And CJ is living proof of that.
To be honest I don’t trust anyone that finds Hannah Gadsby funny to determine what is or is not “up”. Is Christianity punching up? Islam? American jews? Corporate feminism? What about giant charities that give a small portion of their money to the unfortunate? What if the terrible corporate charity supports a disease/gender/issue you care about? Do I need to know the comic’s full biography and medical history before answering these?
I’m personally uncomfortable with almost any “funny” animal video. They’re naturally exploitative and almost all of them involve stressing out an animal in your care for internet points. Is throwing a blanket up and tricking your dog into panicking that you’ve disappeared punching up or punching down? Does my disproportionate revulsion to these incapable animals being “punched down” mean the videos aren’t “funny”?
All of this word salad just kind of implies that context doesn’t matter because context is unknowable. I don’t accept that. Context matters and we are capable of critical thought. Sometime we’ll have all or much of the context, sometimes we will have little. That’s life. In cases where we have enough context and a comedian’s attempt at comedy is transparently hurtful to a group of people that are already subject to broad social discrimination we have to start asking ourselves if that comedian is doing a good job or not. When comedians in position of relative privilege create comedy that is hurtful to others, they should certainly be held to task for that.
I don’t see a problem with you finding the videos to be not funny, and I wouldn’t consider a criticism of the people that make them to be totally illegitimate. You seem hung up on the concept of absolutisms (is something FUNNY or NOT FUNNY? is something DOWN or UP?) when these matters are substantially relative.
I only care if comics are funny. If yes, I watch them. If not, I don’t.
As far as I’m concerned, they can joke about whatever they want.
Lenny Bruce hit the nail on the head IMO (I know Carlin is the screenshot but just hit play).
Of course, you can’t complain if people do get offended. It’s impossible to be an edgy comic like Dave Chappelle or Bill Burr and not rub people the wrong way from time to time even if you don’t intend to. Damn near 7 billion people on this planet. Safe to say that a large enough group exists to be outraged about something on social media no matter what you joke about.
They just have to do their thing and fuck the haters. Those people who are bitching at them were never fans of theirs in the first place. And even if they were, you gotta sacrifice the few for the many if you’re a comic.
In case you are wondering why you’re getting roasted for this shit: You can make fun of the overprivileged for being overprivileged, not for being trans. You can make fun of horrible people for being horrible, not for being trans. When you make fun of trans people, even the horrible overprivileged ones you just sound like a dick.
