Winter cricket and bridge thread - Held over by popular demand

“Inappropriate jokes” for a captive audience at a statutorily protected place like work (or even a dinner table to one’s sad children) has no relation to those made in a traditional public forum.

Yeah, comparing what you might hear after paying money to see a standup comedian to what is appropriate in a workplace is weird!

Jim Gaffigan consistently cracks me up. NewsRadio is my favorite show of all time. MST3K and Futurama didn’t have much edge-lording.

It can be done.

Canada is interesting in that the Human Rights Commission has expanded their own jurisdiction by saying comedy clubs are workplaces like any other. There are big bright lines between:

  1. Jokes at school
  2. Jokes in private
  3. Jokes in the workplace
  4. Jokes at comedy clubs
  5. Jokes at comedy clubs between staff
  6. Jokes at comedy clubs directed at audience members/hecklers
  7. Jokes directed at public officials
  8. Jokes that incite violence
  9. Jokes in print/on the internet

and while I think I’m smart enough to distinguish between all of them I doubt gubment is.

Anyone else have to google what ultraboosts are?

Yep and from my extensive research they’re umm… basically just shoes?

They seem ridiculously expensive for pretty basic looking running shoes.

Most running shoes are rip offs.

If Dave Chappelle’s more recent work was as funny as his earlier stuff there wouldn’t be any discussion about whether or not it’s appropriate. The argument can only exist when his material is mediocre.

Punching up/punching down is nonsense.

Funny standup is all about getting at truth in a way that’s non-cliche and accessible; timing, physical energy, storytelling all matter. It’s art.

This might be the whitest post of all time.

Bro - can’t you take a joke?

White people are the only people that use the “punching up/punching down” garbage.

Literally white knighting

Had the opportunity to introduce my older brother to Chappelle show a few years ago. Great fun watching him get blown away.

Chappelle probably isnt as funny as before, but his show wasn’t 100% hits. His standup isnt now either.

The big change I see in Chappelle: He’s relying more on his craft than point of view. He can sell anything and get laughs. (Count how many times he bends over, laughs off mic, slaps the mic on his leg, etc) If he took his time and really refined the lgbq and trans bits he could have something without changing his pov. I think his best recent special was the one from the comic store belly room. The final Iceberg Slim bit is some real shit.

The Hannah Gadsby special is the perfect example of what Dave isn’t doing. That set is refined to perfection and slays on difficult subjects.

It really isn’t, though. The court jester poked fun at the king. That was his key role. He didn’t mock the peasants. That’s not how any of this works.

Love Dave Chapelle for a lot of reasons. He came in after the Dayton shooting and brought a whole community together. Still, he’s been fucking up lately.

I just want to see the Time Haters come back. That was amazing. I could watch an entire Netflix series of Silky Johnson and Buck Nasty going back in time to hate on historical dickholes.

Nah. Plenty of comedians have made light of their own lower social strata: Jeff Foxworthy and Chris Rock immediately come to mind.

Dude threw in an old, bad joke because he had to fill 3 specials and Netflix was throwing tens of millions at him.
