I doubt that’s the motivation. Probably just lazy (paper checks), really lazy (don’t want to opt-in to Zelle, which I checked and it’s available at their bank), and don’t want to pay fees (Venmo, which is what I used up to now). I hate dealing with money and I have spent hours looking into this bs. The contact they gave me for their bank never called back so they’re getting a wire transfer. I don’t know what objection there could be to that so whatever.

Are you just renting from an individual? Do they accept cash?

It’s kind of a family operation but the actual owner is not one of the people I talk to directly. I doubt they want to deal with cash, seems like more of a pita than a check. I had thought of physically going to their bank and seeing if I can deposit directly to their account by some medium. I mean take my money already, please.

The cash thing was a joke. Did you move and not have to pay this landlord before? Do they have other tenants?

You could threaten to pay in pennies, I think they have to accept any US currency, no? Be sure to engage the local news when you make the drop, they love shit like that.

I’ve been here a couple of years. Started with paper checks. Then Venmo. Now…? There are 12 units in the building. I think 3 are occupied by the owner’s family members. They asked for the change last month but due to the confusion it caused, delayed it a month. The only added information they’ve provided now is a contact person for their bank, but that person is unresponsive. I guess I can call again, but that’s something else I hate doing. The owner’s people I talk to are actually really nice, they’re just either uninformed or not empowered.

I rented a place once where I deposited the rent directly into the owner’s account. That seems like a good way, but a bit of a PITA if you aren’t a member of the bank and can’t do an internal transfer. I had to go to the credit union in person every month to make the deposit. Aint nobody got time for that.

Have you asked other tenants how they have handled it?

Anyways, I still mail in checks for my rent because I refuse to pay the convenience fee for using their online portal.

He can cancel the check if the letter gets lost in the mail.

Another option, but still a PITA, is to buy a money order at the post office and mail it to them. It’s what my tenants without checking accounts used to do.

The current price of a first-class stamp is $0.58, but I have a lot that were bought when they were around $0.50. It’s about five dollars to pay online.

$5 for each payment. My utility bill is separate and also includes a convenience fee of about $3 if I want to pay online.

The town that perpetually smells like cow shit is the hottest housing market in America.

No. I rarely see any of them other than the guy nominally in charge and he doesn’t seem to know any more than I do. We’re probably all in the same boat. Or maybe their banks have other, better bill pay options than mine. Or, and this is what I suspect, they haven’t noticed that “online bill pay” just ends up sending a paper check to the address we were given (which is just the owner’s bank’s address!).

Maybe the Ivermectin junkies think there will be a lot of horse paste there?

There’s a little closet thing at the base of the stairs like 20 feet from where I’m sitting they used to have us drop checks/money orders into and that was fine. Heck, I could walk across the hall and hand it to the landlord’s son but that’s not what they want for whatever reason. It’s frustrating.
