Winter 2021 LC Thread—I Want Sous Vide

No way anyone would get this, too hard imo. A fairer bet would be just to cull Coke from the other 9. I’d still bet against.

Coke vs Pepsi is the one no one’s going to get. Cream soda vs anything is like a freebie.

I’m saying you just have to ID them as cola not brand.

Lol at this proposed bet. I thought you were arguing that people couldn’t easily tell the difference between Dr Pepper and Coke?

That’s essential the bet. You just have to categorize the 10 into cola, Dr Pepper, rootbeer and cream soda.

I’m not sure why you need a bet that is more confusing and has more steps than the RFBBQC process to prove your thesis that distinguishing between Coke and Dr Pepper isn’t easy.

I don’t know how to make a fair bet with a 50/50 probability.

Probably repeat it like 3 times is enough.

Still 1/8 chance of winning by pure chance.

I can help with the statistical significance testing if this actually happens.

You said you wanted some fun right? Not sure why this would bother you then.

I mean, going back to your entry into this conversation,

It seems like you’re imagining a much different problem than most people here, especially given the videos you posted. Getting a single small portion of an unidentified beverage blind and being asked to nail down not only class but brand and sweetener used in a single shot is really, really tough, especially when you’re on the clock and have to go through many things quickly. Like, in one of those videos, they had almond butter, and almost no one got it because they kept saying peanut butter. When the things you’re trying to identify are so broadly distinct as prosciutto and almond butter and tarragon, the difference between peanut butter and almond butter is almost nothing in comparison. It’s kind of a dick move in the competition, really. Like, why not also put out iberico ham instead of prosciutto, and then award no points to the people who named the more familiar cured pork product that tastes really similar?

Getting two portions, one of which you know to be Coke and the other you know to be Dr. Pepper and figuring out which is which is way, way easier. The search space is smaller, and getting to go back and compare makes a huge difference. Like, you put those same chefs up to the table with a bunch of portions that they know to be peanut butter, almond butter, cashew butter, and walnut butter, I think most of them get them all right.

Doesn’t your ability to differentiate flavors decrease as you taste more and more things consecutively? So spamming the taste test with a bunch of options decreases the probability of the taster accurately guessing what is being tasted.

Anyways, we should have a thread for talk about non-alcoholic beverages and, in homage to the mainstay Jeopardy category, it should be called “Impotent Potables”.

I have learned that this is a thing:

Years ago a friend was adamant he could differentiate between all kinds of cheap beer. So we setup a bet with him but used all the same beer. It played out pretty much exactly the same as this.

Lol, one of the most unbelievable (and by that I really mean “absolutely predictable”) products was the briefly available Colt 45 “Cool Colt” mentholated malt liquor. Not good.

I’ll bet you $1 you can’t differentiate between a regular PBR. Catch, you have to drink the entirety of both cans.

Lol my proposed bet is Dr. Pepper vs. Coke.

I don’t have enough confidence Coke vs. Pepsi to bet. No one can tell the difference between 7up vs. Sprite.

I did the Pepsi challenge and failed. I think they let the Coke get warm and cold so it was less carbonated.

I love the idea of actually pouring Colt 45 into a glass before drinking it.
