Who will run in 2020?

I’m not sure we needed a full press release like that to recommend the same shit that everyone else recommends every single time. I mean, it’s not BAD stuff per se, and to my knowledge there aren’t any candidates who are willing to say we should ban handguns Or do something else that might actually have an effect, but it’s also all meaningless fluff that won’t dent the gun violence rate. It bothers me that this is the progressive stance on guns.

It doesn’t, but I don’t like the rest of the paper much either except for the assault weapons ban.

But were we really better for 6 months?

6 weeks after the attack the government passed a law that was the neoconservative wish list that was sitting around waiting for such an occasion. Maybe that kind of blind and thoughtless sticking together as a nation was not being better.

What bothers me is that he starts with historical revisionism of a dangerous West Wingy variety and moves on to how to beef up the police and surveillance state before getting to anything progressive.

I read it as restoring what Trump has dismantled (basically all of the existing infrastructure that was used to study/investigate domestic terrorism and white nationalism/radicalism). I understand that you are predisposed to disliking his plans, as I am probably predisposed to liking them, though.

I know most of you (maybe none of you) have donated or signed up for Pete’s mailing/text list (you should, he sends about 2-3 emails per week as opposed to the inbox spam most of the others send), but if you had, he did something brilliant yesterday. He sent out a mass text where if you replied “call”, it connected you first to a recording of Pete asking you to call your senators to demand action, then if you continued, connected you directly to your senator’s office. the recording of Pete even gave you suggestions on things you could say when you got connected to your senator’s office.

Sure, it’s basic, but I haven’t seen anyone else using tech this way. And 17k people had called based on a tweet of his last evening.

Giving money to law enforcement for combatting white nationalism is not different than giving it to border patrol to make the conditions at the border camps better, imo. The problem isn’t funding.

I’m not predisposed against Mayor Pete. I like him. I think he’s a very smart guy who means well. I’m predisposed against the answer to problems (international terrorism or domestic) being ramping up military, police, and surveillance.

If we could roll things back to before 2001, before the Patriot Act, before ICE, before the Department of Homeland Security, that wouldn’t be enough, but it would be a nice start.

Yeah I’m deeply deeply unimpressed with Mayor Pete. He’s better than Biden of course, but that’s mainly because he’s younger and more in touch with the present. He’s still spent enough time at McKinsey and in the company of lobbyists for me to never see him as my first choice.

New quinnipiac poll released today. Warren up, Harris way down, Biden still leading but his lead is shrinking. Between Biden vs Warren he’s still killing it among voters who only care about beating Trump and/or black voters. Gonna need that to change at some point.

Also worth mentioning in that poll is that self-identified “very liberal” Democrats went 40% for Warren and 20% for Sanders, that seems like a super bad result for Sanders.

It’s also based on people who are paying a lot of attention and watched the debates. Most of America didn’t, and aren’t paying attention.

Not really:

A total of 81 percent of Democrats and Democratic leaners watched or listened to all or most of the two-night Democratic presidential debate or paid close attention to media stories about the debate.

All polls have a selection bias problem in that people who are engaged with politics are more likely to participate.

I’m very tuned in and don’t answer the phone for polls. The 2nd debates had a bit more than half the viewership of the 1st ones. The polls really shouldn’t have moved much other than for people who watched both.

After all the whining last election about Bernie and POCs, I’m expecting radio silence from that wing of the party about the fact that Sanders leads Warren among black people 16-8. Sanders also leads with men (19-16) but is getting annihilated among women, as you might expect. There’s only one other demographic he leads Warren in - people who say they paid no attention to the debates. Not great.

Sanders is also terminally weak vs Warren among 50-64 yo (6-23) and 65+ (5-18) which also seems not great.

Q5 on that poll is absolutely infuriating. Biden does not have the best chance against Trump. Jesus Fucking Christ.

I’m still convinced it’s mostly just name recognition combined with “feels” at this point. Everyone has heard of Biden and he makes them feel like Obama happy happy, so that’s who they pick.

Lol give Biden time and he’ll completely burn up all the goodwill he accumulated under Obama. Kind of tragic honestly. He made the right choice in 2016. He should have stuck by it.

Bernie on Joe Rogan!!!

i love that bernie is literally whispering. he’s always yelling, it seems like

Biden just seems inevitable at this point. Absolute hot garbage performance in two debates and he’s still way ahead in the polls. Plus the DNC and NYT are going to go to the mat for him. Only real hope is Sanders or Warren dropping out and endorsing the other and even then it’s a horserace.

I cannot fathom watching those debates and not thinking Warren was hands-down crushing everyone on both substance and style.
