Republicans have been doing this tactic since Newt Gingrich, and it never ceases to be effective. It’s like some virus for which society has no natural immunity. The whole system is predicated on the idea that both sides are acting in something resembling good faith. When one side switches to bad faith the system has no answer.

I was going to say it seemed to start with Newt Gingrich as well. Just bald-faced lying to your face. The Republicans are accused of doing X. No, they say, the Democrats are doing X. What? Where did that come from? How can you argue with that view?
