Based on some of the actions of police taking selfie’s and not being prepared they were defunded. I’m sure they will be back up to full force when it’s the left they get to beat down.

Exactly. The capitol police are clearly completely ineffective. If their budget (along with other police budgets) was spent on social services and mental health then it may go some way to quelling the violence.

Here’s the conclusion. No lies told, AFAICT.

The Riot as a Teachable Moment

It is up to the Left to expose the linkages between the Republican Party and the far-right groups it has systematically mobilized and encouraged — and which will no doubt come under closer state scrutiny as Biden takes office. Highlighting these ties could create further divisions within the Republican Party, with the goal of fracturing and dismantling it as a political force.

However, focusing exclusively on the specter of a fascist threat will only serve to enable a restoration of bipartisan neoliberal stability under Biden — exactly what created the conditions for the extreme right’s growth in the first place. Democratic control of the Senate certainly improves the Left’s chances to advance a progressive agenda. But it does not, on its own, save us from a return to austerity over the longer term, or bring an end to ecological and social devastation.

Only by organizing and fighting, both on the terrain of the state and in the streets, can the Left hope to make any real progress toward addressing the climate emergency, mitigating the social crisis wrought by decades of neoliberalism, and expanding vital programs for social provision, such as Medicare for All. And this will mean not just defeating the Right, but also taking on Biden and the Democratic establishment, now poised to serve as the crucial vehicle for renewing the neoliberal consensus.

Especially considering that president-elect Biden is saying things like "We need a Republican Party,” he said. “We need an opposition that is principled and strong.”, just two days ago.

“Right-wing terrorism is multiplying more than it would if the Democrats put into place actual helpful policies for poor and working-class people” seems like a pretty clear truth to me. Obviously the Dems aren’t causing right-wing terrorism but their feckless opposition certainly isn’t going to reduce or, much less, eliminate it.

The article makes a lot of good points with which I agree. But the cliff notes takeaway is not and should not be that the rise of right-wing terrorism is due to failures of Democrats. That’s just batshit crazy.

Right wing terrorism is increasing because of right wingers, their allies & enablers multiplied by environmental factors. Because those people aren’t living in a vacuum. They exist in a world where systemic and environmental factors determine how easily RWers can gain traction.

Neo-liberal policies create the environmental conditions in which right wingers can flourish. When neo-libs force feed us corporate sponsored free trade deals that devastate our communities, when neo-libs vote for endless wars while our home towns crumble, well that creates the environment where RWers and fascists can claim to have the answers to people’s problems. Politicians like Biden have spent their careers advancing those policies, and therefore creating the environmental conditions.

That’s my take away from the article.
