War crimes in Ukraine: Just asking questions about both sides

No. But I probably could from the description of what took place. Stop deflecting, nobody is identifying war crimes from pictures alone.

Over here we call that “news”, comrade.

Right. That’s my point. I can’t either. I’m saying that I don’t know if those apartment buildings were hit because there were soldiers or militia shooting out of them or because the Russians wanted to blow up apartments buildings full of civilians.

So, let’s not conflate what we’re talking about here. If we’re talking about, for example, the pilot who bombs a residential building, then OK, I accept there might be some justification if there were infantry entrenched there. But the onus would be on the aggressor to demonstrate that, because otherwise that would give anyone carte blanche to bomb the shit out of all the civillians they want and say “it was coming right for us”.

Anyway, all this is hypothetical. Ukraine has released evidence of intercepted communications that marauding was a matter of policy and soldiers were given orders to shoot “subversives” on sight. I am sure they will release more in due course.

As I said, I doubt rape was part of the official policy, but I don’t see it being acknowledged or punished either.

In short, the side that censors all their internal media, has no free speech, is the aggressor, has been proven to lie 90+% of the time etc., calls all unfavourable news and pictures “fake”, “staged” etc. does not get anywhere near as much benefit of the doubt as the side that is providing the evidence. That’s how credibility works in court, that’s how it works in life, and that’s how it works here. This isn’t a “he said, she said”, it’s a “she said, 5 times convicted rapist said”.

Fuck you asshole. Tell us more about how it’s understandable that Russian soldiers are raping women because their husband’s dared to defend their home.

Tell you more? I never said anything remotely like that.

I dunno, maybe they could have said this is an insanely stupid war and that our thesis that we would be greeted as liberators was instantly proven wrong so maybe we should just go home.

Nah, let’s just rape their women instead. It’s wrong, of course, but I understand…

This isn’t a Chris Rock routine, jackass.

I for sure don’t take what Russia is saying at face value or anything close to it. Same thing with Ukraine, both sides in any war are going to be lying and propagandizing nonstop.

SK, this is gross. Please stop.

You literally have victim and witness testimony of torture, rapes and summary executions, with supporting evidence, and you want to both-sides that? Fuck you.

just out of curiousity, can you link any pro-russian propaganda telegrams so i can cross-reference?

last i checked those, the propaganda was gun-ho about taking kyiv. strange how that simply disappeared from their narrative

Yeah but he ignores all that. So he doesn’t know for sure if it’s real.

Of course I think that both sides in a war are going to be lying and propagandizing. That doesn’t mean the accounts you are referring to are false.

And if it is real, then of course it is bad. But I don’t want to bother checking if it is real. But if I did check and it was real…. well, these things happen in war so it no way reflects on the conduct of our boys as a whole. And by the way, did you know some Ukranian civilians are taking up arms to defend their homes? I heard the dastardly Americans put them up to yet, they are exporting their 2nd Amendment!

I’m not saying our boys should just kill every man, woman and child in Ukrainian to teach them a lesson. But if they did…. well these things happen in war.

I didn’t say they were equal. I said that both sides are propagandizing nonstop. Take the Iraq War as an example. The US was 100% at fault but I’d be a fool to take anything that Baghdad Bob said at face value.

Take a prosecutor and a defense lawyer. How do we know which has the right version of events? Oh, I know, why don’t we use that thing between our ears and weigh up the fucking evidence, and maybe, if it’s got more than a couple of neurons, try and construct a logical chain of events.

Or, you know, we could just do a you and say “well, two conflicting versions, everyone has their own agenda, guess we’ll never know”.

one side is covering up war crimes. the other side is showing evidence of war crimes to the world in order to get more immediate aid, and eventually justice in the ICC. not the same thing.

Are they lying? Is it staged? Are the bodies mannequins?

That’s just the story that happens to be on the BBC front page now. There are dozens, probably hundreds.
