jalfrezi and I are the only ones allowed to get properly stupid in a walrus

Agreed but Dilla is one of the most original stylistic things to happen in music in the last several decades. That sound is still all over new records coming out today. His MPC is in the Smithsonian ffs. And of course Dids is not a fan. Thatā€™s, like, all giant green check marks in his favor.

u guys ever heard Tom Greenā€™s rap crew?

Oh thanks for the reminder. My current schedule has made it a little harder for me to get to listening to and ranking the last two categories. I already know a fair number of the songs but itā€™s going to be a little while until I get to a reveal, sorry! Hoping to do more listening this weekend and maybe into early next week, then category 4 reveal maybe next Friday or the weekend.

Alright just bumping so you know I havenā€™t forgotten you all, previous post still stands, hoping for weekend reveal! I usually do my listening at work but itā€™s kind of insane so harder to focus on ranking songs appropriately. Category 4 has been fun to listen to but not easy to rank given the criteria. Actually not that much fun but at least thereā€™s a lot of variety.

OK on track for a weekend reveal, looking at tomorrow afternoon if at all possible. This category was pretty difficult to judge and rank because people approached it from different angles, although the thing that made it hardest was work going bonkers slashing hours so that everyone is incredibly overworked to the point where simply listening to a few songs at a time is a challenge. I appreciate everyoneā€™s patience and hope you all are still enjoying this walrus!

Looking forward to it!

Kinda in the same boat. Pulling 16hr days all week on the farm. Unlikely to be able to sweat this round sadly.

I think youā€™ve been a great host Mjiggy. Life getting in the way is perfectly understandable, and I think all people ask is a quick note to help us set expectations if reveals are going to be delayed (which you do a great job of).

This next category was a really weird one for me to find a submission for. I assumed you would be judging based on the snippet of the song we are referring to as still liking, but you could just as well be scoring the whole song. Anyway, I am 99% sure you would detest all of my submission, but perhaps take something from the snippet. Even that is a riskā€¦but what can I say? Walrus brings out the wild in me.

If it helps, my issue with my submission is that the lyrics are incredibly dumb.

Thanks for your patience all. Work is beyond shit show levels but if we get it under control by this afternoon Iā€™ll do the reveal then, if not will hope for tomorrow.

Alright letā€™s just try to get started and see what happens. Summoning @seities @microbet @TheDuker @All-InFlynn @JohnnyTruant @cassette @Chuckleslovakian @Lawnmower_Man @eyebooger

Letā€™s check back with what I wrote in the original announcement:

A song you donā€™t love but still listen to because it has a great intro/chorus/solo etc. This sounds like a fun idea that goes with my ā€˜popularā€™ theme. How many ā€˜greatā€™ songs actually kind of suck but have an amazing hook?

Itā€™s clear from the wide variety of submissions that people interpreted this category in different ways; some sent songs that they donā€™t really like overall but didnā€™t identify a particularly enjoyable aspect of it, some sent songs that maybe they donā€™t like at all but that have a neat part, and a few people seem to have gotten closer what I was going for by sending an otherwise mediocre song with a great section. However, due to the lack of clarity for the submission criteria resulting in me being unable to make a proper hierarchy, I have decided to flatten the curve by awarding fewer points this round to groups of songs rather than individuals.

My initial idea was to award no points but that seems too punishing for people who actually got closer to the criteria I was looking for. If Iā€™m being honest, Iā€™m not entirely sure where I got this category from or exactly what I would have liked for submissions, although there were around 4-5 submissions that seemed to get it somewhat right. Something like this, a song that is pretty mediocre but has a chorus that gets me nodding along, maybe?

Or maybe reevaluating a song that we consider good to great but really it just has a good hook or something else that keeps you listening (someone did submit a song that hit this criteria). Anyway, letā€™s try to get to it and see what happens. Knives out for Jiggy changing the rules!

Yeah, these ā€œbest song that sucksā€ categories are kinda hard. Next walrus I judge Iā€™ll have a category for worst song that fits some criteria and really the song I hate the most will win.

Category 1 - What Do You Mean You Donā€™t Love This Song? (1 pt)

One criteria that should have been clear was ā€œa song you donā€™t loveā€, so if you submitted a song that is in fact awesome, especially without criteria as to what makes it good/bad, you got put at the bottom of the rankings. First up is Lawnmowerman, aka Mr. Pull Up Your Pants, with

M.I.A - Paper Planes

You mustā€™ve missed the ā€œperfect pop songā€ walrus category where this finished respectably and basically everyone agreed that yes, this song is the tits. This was classified in the submission as ā€œshitty song with a great hookā€ but obviously I disagree.

The other member of this group was Microbet with
Digital Underground - The Humpty Dance.

This song is also great, and even if it wasnā€™t, it certainly doesnā€™t have a particularly memorable chrous or musical interlude or anything else that I can hear. I do think there are a lot of hip hop songs out there that would have been good for this category due to having great beats and hook and then a bunch of filler, but unfortunately I donā€™t think the ones that were picked hit the mark.
