Walrus Quarantine Version 1 - Reveal Thread

Next up in 7th place for six points is Eyebooger’s submission of

Moist - Resurrection

This was probably the hardest song for me to place. I don’t love it but I certainly find it less disagreeable than the stuff at the bottom of the rankings. I could see being in the mood to listen to this, theoretically. At least I wouldn’t snap turn it off if it came on the radio. I feel like there are a lot of other songs from this era that sound similar to this as well but none that were submitted. A thoroughly mediocre but not unpleasant submission.

Sorry not a response to miliboo, not sure how to remove that.

Ooof, so close: 10th, 10th, 9th.

Coming in sixth place for 7 points is Lawnmowerman with:

Garbage - Special

Hey who would guess that I’d enjoy a radio-friendly, pop-rock song from a band that was pretty big back in the day? I don’t love this or anything but it’s certainly fine. This also concludes the “rock” portion of this category, which ended up being quite polarized.

What could people have submitted that I would have enjoyed more? No clue tbh. Maybe some punk? I like Weezer’s Pinkerton album. None of the remaining songs are in the rock genre so if people want to start posting some stuff that would be ok.

Alright we are on a roll, let’s see if we can finish this out. In fifth place is CanadaMatt3004 with:

Cake - Mexico

Mmmm, Cake. I own Comfort Eagle and listened to it quite a bit back in the day so a Cake song was a pretty good choice, even if this wouldn’t rank among my favorites (I had never heard this song before this submission. A relaxing tune with a melody you can hum along to while swaying, although maybe a little too much Jimmy Buffet DNA. Unlike a lot of the other submissions, I wasn’t looking forward to this one ending on repeat listens.

How about a 18 min political outburst from punk-rock extraordinaire?

I wish I had a schilling
For every senseless killing
I’d buy a government

16 and angry as fuck. Life was simple.

Not feeling that Cake song at all.

How much were people angle shooting songs they thought Jiggy would like? Or are these genuine favorites of the 90’s?

Nice.

I do like NOFX and similar bands

In fourth place and oh so close to a storybook podium after two last place finishes is All-In Flynn:

Bentley Rhythm Ace - Bentley’s Gonna Sort You Out

I don’t know that this is actually a better song than The Rockafeller Skank but it got big bonuses for 1) having no lyrics and therefore being less obtrusive and 2) me never having heard it before and therefore not minding listening to it a few times. It’s fun! I’m not sure what else to say about it, an interesting choice that paid off mostly by being not as bad as other stuff.

Damn that’s a rough category when a song gets bonus points for blending into the background

I honestly think The Decline is remarkably underrated (and not very similar to most of their work and genre). A political punk concept album/song that is still good today? That’s a unicorn if I ever seen one.

I can’t remember what song I picked (usually the case). I think that increases the suspense here.

Let’s get to the podium, which had one rule: no headbangers allowed. I really liked all of these submissions and they probably could have been ranked in any order. Since even one of my rules is something new beats something I’ve heard a lot before, third place goes to microbet’s submission of a mega-hit from the era:

Lauryn Hill - Doo Wop (That Thing)

Lauryn Hill is just ridiculous in this time period, cranking out hit after hit with the Fugees and as a solo act. I probably listened to this song 1000s of times in high school but I hadn’t heard it in a while and was plenty happy to be reminded of it, unlike some of the other submissions. Cool video too.

Now I remember. I knew I shouldn’t have posted about this category before getting revealed. Jinxed myself.

Even angry 16 year old me would agree that’s an almost perfect pop song.

In second place, cassette makes it onto his first podium of the walrus with:

Blackalicious - Alphabet Aerobics

I’m not sure why I never got into Blackalicious, they should have been right in my wheelhouse and I had a college roommate who was really into the. As it stands, I know some of their songs, including this one, but am not really up to speed on their catalog. This is an amazingly crafted song but I don’t know if it was a huge hit when it came out. It did, however, get a second life a few years back thanks to this clip:

Not sure if I should add or detract bonus points for this, pretty sick work by Harry Potter though.

Try it on molly!*
