Hank Williams III - Hillbilly Joker
Commentary: Country is not my thing, so this one took some effort. Who would have thought that I just had to go to the Hank Williams bloodline to find something that kicked ass?

This is the kinda thing that plays in bars where I live in the summer. Always fun shows. Never forget your ear plugs though. This is more of like a psycho-billy kinda thing. Google says it’s Cow Punk, which I’ve never heard of before. I dig it though. Cool entry.
Nailed it.
Let’s summarize the happenings so far:

Jason Dea West - Railroad Ghost

This is really cool. Those metal body resonators weigh a fucking ton, but you get that sweet slide sound. This is the kinda song where I actually pay attention to the lyrics. This song gives a feel of a certain time and place. Kinda outcast or an outsider roaming around.
Sorry I’m being slow, everyone. I’m in a teams call for work that I wasn’t expecting.
eta: just ended
That’s mine. I love it so I expected you’d stick it in the middle
I thought this was your job

Bert Jansch - Poison
Review
This was the only song I’d heard before. It’s a song I know quite well and never really thought of it as country adjacent. I guess it has some sorta country elements. It’s got a cool swagger. The background harp stuff is more of a blues harp sound to me. I really like this song, but the rest were new to me and were more enjoyable that way. If you’ve never heard this song before, check it out. It’s fucking awesome.
Boooo!!!
I was so psyched when I found this song doing research for your category. Bert Jansch was a name that came up when I was looking for artists like Townes Van Zandt and this got stuck in my head for days afterwards.
That said, you placed me 1st in the Pauwl zone, in the Pauwl category…so I think it’s fair to say I actually won.
Anyway, glad to know you do really like the song, even if I didn’t introduce it to you

Kitty Wells - It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels
Commentary: Because of the category name, this was the first song that came into mind.

Awesome Boston! This is the kinda old time country I was trying to push people towards. It has everything. Pedal steel at the start, fiddle solo in the middle, old country twang singing. So relaxing, just kick back and enjoy kinda music. Well done!
Booyah!

Patsy Cline - Walkin’ After Midnight
Review
More pedal steel goodness. This one has better vocals than the previous. Patsy can belt it out. I don’t know anything about most of these artists, but I’ve at least heard of Patsy Cline. Another great old time country song. Gorgeous track!
Well at least this category will get dropped for me. Damn.

Colter Wall - The Devil Wears a Suit and Tie
Commentary: Possibly too well known? Idk, I don’t listen to this shit. I like the phrases he chooses on the guitar and he has an interesting enough singing voice.

Our unexpected winner.
I don’t really know this shit either. Sounded good to me.
When he started with a turnaround, I thought it was gonna be a blues song. It definitely has blues elements. This is the kinda thing I go to at dive bars. Just a guitar and a kick drum. Or they’ll have a tambourine or stomp pad on the floor. “Outlaw Country!”
Some nice fingerpicking on what looks to be a parlor guitar. No finger picks. Just a young guy from Saskatchewan, but sounds like a 60 year old grizzled veteran. It’s so tough sounding almost like he’s half drunk at times. Check it out!
