Walrus Grab Bag 4 Reveal

I had no idea until now that Sia was 45 years old.

I just realized that this round could be decided by who is able to submit the worst music if NotBruceZ reveals last.

Who am I kidding? Nicholas is going to reveal the last category.

In 4th place scoring 9 points: Porcupine Tree “The Incident”

This song also has a slow burn structure to it that I criticized a bit in two earlier entries, but it more than makes up for it with interesting vocal textures and timely heavy riffs. Has an almost a Nine Inch Nails feel to it, in a good way. Good choice.

Welcome to the podium!

Bronze place arrived here as the last song standing in the “pretty good” portion of the category

Silver place is a “this is my shocked face” surprise to me. When I saw the artist on the list I thought it was going to be a bless your heart situation.

And gold place bestrode this category like a Colossus.

Do you know which you are yet?

Yup!

I very much doubt I am 2nd place. Not sure about colossus… my song is pretty good though. Soooo…

In 3rd place scoring 10 points: Sonic Youth – “Incinerate”

I love the hook above all else in this track, but it has other elements of alternative rock I really like, although I don’t have the musical vocabulary to explain it. Apparently they have a thing for tuning their instruments in odd ways, maybe that is the secret. It reminds me of early Pinback for those of you who know Pinback. It’s subdued but not boring. It’s in that sweet spot of not having a conventional indie rock sound without being too unconventional. I enjoyed it.

In 2nd place scoring 11 points: Paul Simon – “I Know What I Know”

Just kind of embarrassing that when I saw this in my list that my first thought was lol Paul Simon, this is going to be a “bless your heart” nodium. It’s not that I didn’t know he was one of the best song writers out there, maybe it was just latent prejudice from my salad days of only liking metal?

Anyway, this turned out to be actually kind of… fantastic? Love the tempo, the storytelling, and absolutely love the chorus with the interplay of the backing vocals. And also a very nice nod to getting older in a very subtle way. Expert Walrusing.

“Bless your heart” nodium seems to be more my speed, but I’ll take it.

I got lost in all my tabs and posted this to myself in my inbox! Sorry for the delay, but get out your Adele Grammy gifs!

In 1st place scoring 12 points: ORPHANED LAND feat. Hansi Kürsch - “Like Orpheus”

This kicked my ass in every place it needed to be kicked. The vocals have a Serj/SOAD element to them in the beginning, but then the chorus continues to become almost like a DragonForce anthem. Just the right amount of growls, and hearing some Iron Maiden in there too. Amazing emotion, strong lyrical content, a tour de force imo. After I heard this I knew nobody else had a chance to win, although this was last on the list I got so you all were drawing live for like an hour or two.
