The submissions aren’t similar per se but you will notice many share some characteristics. Let me put it this way: If you don’t like electric guitars you’re gonna have a bad time (as you should because obviously there is something wrong with you). Few risks were taken which resulted in me knowing 5 songs already and in a high floor. Even after a dozen listens I never felt the need to skip a song. It also means that the nodium is much closer to the podium than usual.

WHAT WOULD I HAVE SUBMITTED?

This category was inspired by the technical death metal band Allegeon and especially a song they wrote about the golden ratio. Many of their songs deal with science themes. Song titles include: “The Phylogenesis Stretch”, “Gravimetric Time Dilation”, “Dyson Sphere”, “All Hail Science” etc.

I understand this will not be for everybody but at least the music video for the song is also quite funny:

In 12th place scoring 1 point: Science by System of a Down

I am a big SOAD fan as well but I had to make some tough decisions. At one point SOAD was my favorite band and I played the “Toxicity” album on repeat. “Science” is not a bad song although it probably also lands on the nodium for an intra-album walrus. Someone had to be last and song that I had heard at least a hundred times already was the closest to getting skipped.

Well at least the bottom 2 scores are being dropped

eta: video in OP said “Not available”

Does anyone else have this problem? If it’s just me, I’ll stop.

It works for me but in the youtube playlist the title includes [This video is blocked in your country] so it probably is geo-restricted.

Maybe it’s best to focus on this:

Well I know of at least one better song.

Let me borrow the youtube comment gimmick for this next song:

In 11th place scoring 2 points: Liquid by Jars of Clay

I liked the Gregorian chants but the rest of the song is a bit bland and does not really speak to me. It’s inoffensive but repetitive.

In 10th place scoring 3 points: Galaxy Song by Monty Python

I can appreciate daring something completely different. If there had been more songs that I felt were actually nodium worthy I might have bumped this up a spot or two. Unfortunately the song itself doesn’t offer much musically or comedically with just a single punch line. This might work in the context of the movie but not as a stand-alone song. Listening to that birthing sequence in the middle on your headphones without the images to accompany it is a tad boring.

Wow is this song generic. It’s not even bad per se, but it just feels like the most stock 90’s rock song imaginable.

(Pic) (Walrus) Walrus Angel with Halo

Most of the song is fine but unexciting. Then at about 2:48 a short glimpse at a more interesting sound that gets picked up again at ~3:20 and one more time later on. I wish the song had more of that because I truly enjoyed those heavy guitar parts.

In 8th place scoring 5 points: Prayer to God by Shellac

The intro is a bit annoying (“Oh, no. Is this going to be art?”). The song itself feels intense but can’t quite mask that at times it’s just the same chord over and over. Shame because it makes me feel something. This could have been excellent if they tried to be a bit less minimalistic. It’s still good though.

probably the only song on the list by a 2p2er
