5th place (8 points):

La Femme – Antitaxi

(French, multiple females, 4 minutes)

Completely blind prediction: I hope this isn’t trying too hard by going above and beyond the two categories needed. The animation on the Youtube thumbnail has me very worried that this is going to be whiny. 11th place.

First listen: Interesting beginning, reminiscent of Dvorak’s 9th (or the Jaws theme that ripped it off…or Baby Shark). This reminds me of a video game boss music. Is there going to be singing? Big tempo change there, still no words. Is it really “French” with no lyrics? Good thing it fits two other categories. Oh, there are the lyrics, over 2 minutes into the song. Lyrics getting repetitive, not good for a song with 2 minutes of lyrics. This probably just should have been an instrumental. Still liked it though. It won’t be a factor in judging, but the animation is outstanding.

Final verdict: I remain convinced that this should have been an instrumental, but this is pretty neat. On relistens I mostly just ignored the fact that there were lyrics, which was pretty easy to do because the other parts were so good.

Had another song I could have submitted but I thought it might be too rock-y. So I made a bad switch but 7 points are still nice.

4th place (9 points):

Pale Waves – There’s a Honey

(Multiple females, 4 minutes)

Completely blind prediction: 5.5 million views…have I heard this before? I guess it’s possible, but can’t put my finger on it. Got nothing else to go on, but I’ll guess it’s good. 4th place.

First listen: A little dreamy, like the voice. Definitely doesn’t sound familiar. Getting a little repetitive towards the end.

Final verdict: Liked the chorus more on relistens, even though it’s a touch repetitive. Rest of the song is really relaxing and fun. Quite the contrast to the lyrics.

So we got meb and two unknowns who are going to be happy when they open the thread. The podium spots are very different stylistically.

3rd place (10 points):

Saian Supa Crew - La preuve par 3

(French, number)

Completely blind prediction: Not sure what to think about a group that calls themselves “Saian Supa Crew”. Hopefully it’ll be like the French Wu-Tang Clan. 8th place.

First listen: This is funky. There’s a lot going on here. Liking the quick changes with the vocalists. Beat is pretty solid too.

Final verdict: Absolutely in love with these quick changes. Never gets boring. Initial hope of French Wu-Tang might not have been that far off. (There’s some annoying extra stuff in the video. Submitter also gave a spotify link to the song for those interested.

Not surprisingly I’m still alive. This was my favorite submission of the competition and judging by our multiple nodiums, EB and I have similar tastes

So it’s me vs CM for the win.

Would have bet a lot that the Saian Supa Crew was yours of the ones on the podium.

I have no idea which of these is yours and which one is CM’s.

2nd place (11 points):

The New Pornographers – Crash Years

(Multiple females, 4 minutes)

Completely blind prediction: I don’t know this song, but I liked this group quite a bit in the very early 2000s. Expecting greatness. I’d bet on a podium spot.

First listen: Looks like they were still good some years later. Does another song really need whistling though? Minor complaint though. This isn’t quite as good as the best tracks from Mass Romantic or Electric Version, but that’s a high fucking bar.

Final verdict: I almost want to give this the win after Swanky disrespected me yesterday with an 8th for this group, but it’ll have to “settle” for just the silver medal.

Awwww yeah, bit of redemption near the end.

I’m starting to know what Marv Levy felt like. 3rd time as runner up without a W!

Twin Cinema is their best album IMO. Challengers and Together are both really good too and worth a listen. Challengers was their first album with two females in the band, so couldn’t pick anything earlier.

No One Is Innocent - A La Gloire Du Marché

(French, post-2017)

Completely blind prediction: Band name is in English. Song title in French. I don’t know French. I think it’s “To the glory of the (something)”. Not really sure what to expect. My best guess is some avant-garde slow shit that’s going to bore me. Nodium.

First listen: Um, holy shit. I could not have been more wrong. I was not ready for a 50 year old dude to start yelling at me. This kicks all kinds of ass. I didn’t think the French had it in them.

Final verdict: This is unlikely to have the mass appeal as my winners of the previous two grab bags, but this fucking rocks.

That’ll do it for me. Thanks everyone for the submissions.

Now back to your regularly scheduled program of me losing.

I cant imagine anyone not liking skinny French Goldberg yelling at them in a church.

Not only is this my favorite submission here, it might be my favorite submission Ive ever put forth, so Im glad you liked it.
