The Cure - Friday I’m In Love

My history with The Cure is a checkered one. When I was 13 I went on a exchange holiday thing to Belgium (return leg at my gaff), and my partner was a bit of a dick and heavily into The Cure. So that was strike 1 and I ignored them. Then in my first year at Uni I shared a room with another mild prick, who no doubt says the same of me but who was also really into The Cure. Strike 2, they were even deader to me. Then at some point I paid attention to this song and it won me round very quickly. Who doesn’t like a happy ending? (Don’t answer that.)

Anyway, enough biographical waffle, whoever submitted this @mjiggy also took the time to do a write up for me.

Man how do you rank the best pop song of all time? You want something catchy, with simple lyrics that are both easy to make out and memorable, and preferably a great hook. This song sort of lacks that chorus/refrain that pop songs benefit from but it has one of the more interesting structures I can think of and the repeating of the days of the week is a genius mechanism for making it easy sing along with. Both the intro and little musical bridges are wonderfully catchy and, most importantly, not too long, so you get back to the part that people really like.

It’s a song that always feels like one long, deeply, satisfyingly catchy chorus to me, but still with plenty of variety and the above fleshes out the details far better than I could. I just know that when I focused all effort internally and gazed into the deepest part of my soul, I was revolted and thoughts of my mother overwhelmed me and this was the song I was most pleased to hear whenever it came on.

(It was also the second I would have considered, if that’s not obvious.)

Gangnam Style would’ve been funny. Bieber has one really great song that I know of but no not him either.

I see all our guesses were close to the mark…

DO YOU BELIEVE IN MIRACLES??
