In 4th place with 8 points - DJ Shadow - Midnight in a Perfect World
Chill af. Loses a little for familiarity. The video is pretty calming too. Quite the throwback to see a walkthrough of a well-stocked record store. I’m sure that takes many of us back to simpler times. Hard to go wrong with DJ Shadow for this category and without such a top shelf podium this might have nabbed a medal.
The bronze medal and 9 points goes to … Philip Glass (performed by Olivia Belli) - Metamorphosis I
The Phillip Glass stans strike again. Can’t say I had ever heard of the guy before Walrus but I’m always happy to see one of his tracks since then. This is the first time I wish the sub wasn’t anonymous because if this is a Walrus vet I would dock a few points for submitting this artist but if it’s someone new, that’s different. In any case, another really nice piece that has a cool mechanical echo of some sort. Probably the hammers are mic’d up?
When the track finished I just let the rest of the album play through and love it. Thanks.
The silver medal and 10 points goes to . . . Still Corners - The Trip (2013)
Some really nice guitar work. I thought the vocals were just serviceable the first couple listens, but they really grew on me. She isn’t top tier but still quite good. Wiki tells me this is dream pop so I guess this is Pauwl? Maybe not. A great track and certainly calming. I’m shocked this has 56 million views. Is this what the kids are listening to these days? I would have guessed 56 thousand. I like it. This is cool.
The gold medal and 11 points goes to . . . Jim Croce - I Got A Name (1972)
I had never heard of this guy, which is exactly what I hope for in a podium track. A great voice and a great melody. It’s calm, hopeful, but not boring. Just an all-round treat. Thanks.
