Walrus 12: The Reveal!

Even though it’s goofy’s first walrus, I really appreciate the way he’s embraced the spirit of complaining about the judging.

I mean, it sort of goes without saying that somebody who would volunteer to judge the aesthetic tastes of others is likely to be an overly opinionated narcissist. And now with anonymized submissions, there’s no danger in pointing this out!

I had to get a clarification from jiggy for the next one as there seemed to be a rules violation!

Totally agree with this. I don’t think I could ever judge one of these mostly for this reason. I’d probably chicken out and award a 3-way tie for last.

In 9th place with 3 points - Suicide – Cheree (1978)

First impression: Not a very calm band name! I like what the instruments are doing but the breathy whispers are not doing it for me. I think this might be for Cheree and not me.

Later: I like this more after a few listens and reading about the band a little. The context and influence help. But it’s a category miss for me.

*the link is to two songs. I judged the first one only. Hopefully that was the intention.

just finding a song with under 100 youtube views is impressive enough to beat Everclear imo.

Edit - I just listened to it and it wasn’t calming at all. In fact i’m filled with rage and confusion.

Damnit I just had a copy-paste disaster that deleted a write up. Argh.

Ha. Another nodium. Whatever the other one was must have been my proper choice

this is really cool song i never heard but how the fuck is that calming? it’s nerve wrecking (and i imagine on purpose). Really interesting listen though, i’ll check out more of the album I only vaguely recognize.

Yeah, that’s a great song. Suicide are one of those bands I always meant to listen to but never did.

the link you sent includes another song called “I remember”, which apparently is the b-side.

Oops. Didn’t notice it was nearly 8 minutes long

Maybe try listening to some calming music to get back on track.

In 8th place with 4 points - Air - Mike Mills (2004)

Pleasant enough. A bit forgettable. I like the beat that opens the track. The piano at 1:00 and following adds a much-needed extra element. It’s nice.

Edit: to the chagrin of superuberbob, I don’t think this type of background music is that interesting. It’s good to block out other noise but doesn’t really stand out as something I would be excited to hear again or forward on to someone.

I find it relaxing in a sort of hypnotic way. Like I said earlier calm music not really my area

Sorry, my comment wasn’t about your song (which I thought was pretty good and as you say hypnotic). I just meant that if our host was so flustered he’s unable to cut and paste properly, maybe he should take a breath and calm down before proceeding.

this reveal has not been calm

Suicide rocks (the band, that is)

Well, you said you wanted calm, not interesting. If you wanted interesting, I’ve got interesting.

I mean the only truly calm songs that are gonna have lyrics are lullabies.

If #2 was “A calm and interesting song” then chill-hop probably doesn’t fit.
