Walrus 12: The Reveal!

My like was for the Gillian Welch cover.

I love it. Even better than the original, imo.

I’m expecting another last bearing in mind the criticism of my first pick. Also calming music not really in my wheelhouse.

Interested to see the entries though

The only part I don’t like about hosting is picking bottom three. :man_shrugging:

There isn’t a single track here I hated, so good job everyone on that front.

Better last than middle. Embrace the pain

Another reveal I’ll miss

Me too. Being absent for the birth just isn’t the same.

Alright! Let’s reveal…
Category 2: A calm song. Something for the other pandemic.

I had in mind something like this:

But it certainly didn’t have to be in that vein. In fact, none of the submissions are much like that.

In 11th place with 1 point Duumu - Recovery

This had 68 views on youtube when I fired it up, so some hipster submitted this. A bit video game-y. Something weird is going on with the kick drum. The song drags slightly on each kick. I think it’s intentional but it’s hard to tell. Feels a little like some montage music and not in a great way. It’s an interesting mix of calming, bland, and unsettling. The final minute or so is rather unsettling with the off tempo keys (?). An odd mix of norm-core music and off-tempo weirdness.

The lead synth or whatever that is a bit cheesy. Part of the problem might be that I’m not into video games, so soundtracks or soundtrack adjacent music does nothing for me.

Also not very calming from 3 minutes onward.

I hope the submitter isn’t the artist as I talk crap about this track.

In 10th place with 2 points - Everclear - The Good Witch of the North

First impression: Oh yeah, I forgot about this band. Gives me some nostalgia for Much Music.

Later: Everclear are a slight guilty pleasure for me. They are a bit cheesy but pleasant enough. Maybe what Foo Fighters would be without Dave Grohl. I can hardly remember any of their tracks once they’re done, but I never angrily turn them off, so that’s good.

My apologies to Big Dairy. I promise I won’t slander their good name in every review.

I have no idea how anybody could go with a song that isn’t chill-hop for this category. The genre exists to calm you down. There are multiple streaming YouTube channels dedicated to it. Like this one.

EDIT: Stayed up later than expected
