Walrus 12: The Reveal!

whew

Future Islands was one of the best concerts I’ve been to in recent years.

In 10th place with 2 points - Mamamoo - Delilah (2015?)

It’s cool to have a submission from outside America/Europe. So there’s that. I have to admit that these karaoke supergroups just don’t do anything for me. The boy and girl groups of the 90s perhaps scarred me for life. I do like the variety and millions of people are clearly into this stuff. I mean look at this reaction:

Maybe I just don’t get, but I can’t imagine making that face while watching this.

In the end, I’m not feeling it. I’m glad the grandma nodding along at 2:45 is having fun.

At this point I’m afraid I simply must post this criminally overlooked band’s version of it.

I keep seeing a guy in there that looks like Will Ferrell wearing a Kim Jong Un costume.

In 9th place with 3 points - Queen at Live Aid (1985)

A bit mean to submit 20-minute concert to a song contest. To be honest I only listened to this twice, but I know it well. The good: Look at this crowd!

That must have been an incredible experience. Probably not many masks that day! Simpler times.

In the end, this is a legendary performance, but it’s probably not new to anyone here and I feel like it needs to lose several points for submitting the whole thing instead of picking one track.

Nice integrity, if someone submitted that to me I just wouldn’t listen.

(Though I’d lie and say I listened, I dunno, maybe twice.)

I was ready to be annoyed by this ranking because I do think this is a cool song but honestly this performance was pretty flat.

Fun (maybe?) story about late night show performances. I used to have a couple of friends who worked for Fallon so last time I was in NYC (2013) I got tickets to the show. The musical performance was by CHVRCHES and it was their first time playing in the U.S. I honestly thought they were kind of lame but they’ve obviously blown up quite a bit since then. I’ve enjoyed some of their songs but still not a fan of “The Mother we Share”, which is what they played there.

In 8th place with 4 points - Talking Heads - Life during Wartime (1984)

The cool kids aren’t going to like this, but it’s time for some more blasphemy. I don’t really like this band. Here are a few excuses for my objective judgement. Intro drums are out of time! The mix is bad! The dancing is both awesome and pretty funny! I guess that’s good? It is high energy and worth watching, but I don’t have any desire to go back to this, hence the placement. I get why someone who was really into 80s keyboards would like this.

There is no one song in that clip though. It’s a melody of a large number of Queen songs.

In 7th place with 5 points - Live - The Dolphins Cry (not sure when)

Ok, sure. I can get into this. I don’t really care for this band, but the crowd is REALLY into it, which is contagious, and the song is not bad. It is rather 90s, and as we all know, the 90s was recently determined to be the best decade of music. If I close my eyes and pretend this is a band I’ve never heard of I like the song even more. Pretty good.

Yeah I get that, but there are fairly well-defined sections.

Cassette obviously the worst and my plan to sabotage him by forwarding him the songs that people submitted is going swimmingly BUT I will say the audio on that video kind of sucked. The bits I watched were fun, though.

Not to mention breaking the fourth wall of walrus by submitting a live Live performance!

This is getting personal.

Makes you wonder if you could create a GOAT medley, upload it to youtube and win that way.
