Walrus 11thish (Pauwl's) - Reveal Thread

I’m here following along. Hopefully I did well; I’m sure I’ll learn more about what Pauwl likes in any case. And maybe even introduce some of you to something you haven’t heard before.

At least not last. Note to myself: Dont use bands which are prone to be used as a torture by parents.

To me, this ends the nodium. Or is that just last 3?

Anyways, on with the Top 10.

Wilco - Poor Places

"I’d like to link the whole story as here, but I think that would fail the anonymity test.

So, the short version is:
Wilco is a band I discovered in high school at a time long before they were critical darlings. They became a personal favorite of mine, a secret no one knew about, and I followed their development intently. I was eagerly awaiting Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and even grabbed a copy when it leaked. Then Jeff Tweedy fired Jay Bennett. Then their record label dropped them. Then 9/11 happened.

I had tickets to Stubb’s BBQ in Austin, TX to see Wilco on September 22, 2001. I’ve never been to a concert where so much fear and uncertainty hung over the air. And I’ve never seen a better, more electric show. Wilco took all the anxiety we were feeling about the future (and they about theirs) and transformed it into an ecstatic, unforgettable evening.

This song is not only a personal favorite, but the climax of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, and for me a climax for all the deep and complicated feelings I had over the album, its backstory, the moment in history, and my history with the band."

Review

I remembering listening to this album when I was in Uni. First listen, I could still sing along to some of the lyrics. This was very nostalgic to listen to now. I haven’t really followed them since this album. Familiarity helped it a little here because I wouldn’t really like this kind of thing nowadays but the throwback is making me emo about that time in my life. Being sad and listening to sad music. I still listen to mostly sad music but it’s healthy sad as opposed to feeling low.

Well, I jinxed myself by posting.

Anyway, here’s the full story I wanted to tell.

In because when it comes to Walrus I like to watch almost as much as I like to participate.

Queens of the Stone Age - I Appear Missing

“My favorite band might be QOTSA, and this is probably my favorite song they’ve done. To me, it’s the ultimate QOTSA song. Super heavy dirge-like feeling with a brooding melody and lyrics, but there’s tons of layers and texture. Lots of really interesting rhythmic decisions and fills (courtesy of Dave Grohl) and then an absolutely beautiful outro to wrap things up. It’s as close to perfect as I think a QOTSA song can get.”

Review

I used to be a huge QOTSA fan. I think I have all of their albums (Them Crooked Vultures even). I saw them live once. Most drugs I’ve ever seen at a concert. I really like their kind of desert drug-induced sound. It’s kind of maniacal and dirty. It was so different at the time to the rest of the shit that was coming out. I prefer their earlier to mid songs best. I always loved Monsters In the Parasol. “Paul’s dad is warped and bubbling, oh well”.

I don’t think I’ve ever hinted that I liked this band, so good call. Unfortunately, this is from one of their last two albums when I kinda started to check out from them. They kinda lost the dirty desert sound and became more like a typical rock band. Or maybe they became too popular so hipster Pauwl bailed.

This is not a good start!

BNL is me. I came for the One Week, stayed for War on Drugs.

This at least did better than the last place I got when I submitted them on 2p2

Gospel Claws - Summer Nights Lakeside

"A surprisingly difficult category for me, as I’ve mostly embraced the modern theory of musical marketing by embracing individual songs more so than artists and albums. However it hasn’t always been that way, so I decided to reach back a bit and find an artist that had some meaning to me and that you likely haven’t heard before. Back in the pre-pandemic days, my wife and I used to attend the yearly Club Crawl here, where they would set up stages all over downtown for mostly local bands to play on. We always had a good time grabbing food and listening to music even if most of it was forgettable, but one year we stumbled across this band and ended up listening to their whole set and buying their album. They’re one of the few bands from that era who I still regularly listen to today.

Review

A decent indie song. The lyrics are interesting. Repeated listens helped and made me feel nostalgically melancholy even though I’ve never heard of this band. I liked it when this would come up in the playlist.

Ah yes, finally let down my guard and thought I might do well in this category after throwing the next one, oh well.

Well you’re up 5 points in our beef!

Sorry Jiggles, I can only bring myself to Rage Against The Cassette for purely selfish reasons.

That god damn good at Walrus mothafucker.

Our “beef” is like Red Sox/Yankees pre-2004. In other words completely driven by an inferiority complex and no reason for you to even pay attention to it, just me trying to get petty revenge for my dismal performance in your walrus. It would be easier if I didn’t like the songs you posted but I generally find them to be pretty good.

Coheed and Cambria - In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3

" C&C were the band that most helped to get me through some angsty bullshit I had when I was growing up. I remember hearing A Favor House Atlantic when it first debuted as a single, and the voice just took me in immediately. It was such an odd combination of strangeness coupled with real conviction of what he was singing. In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth:3 was always the song I came back to when I fired up their albums years later. I love the length, the key changes, the different emotions expressed through each different section. Is it angsty bullshit? Sure, but its the angsty bullshit that always makes me feel better about my own angsty bullshit. "

Review

I recall being into a cover they did of A Rush and a Push and the Land is Ours by the Smiths that they made sound completely different. I always thought the original was kind of corny. There’s is haunting and amazing. I’m listening to it right now while I’m typing and it’s fucking incredible. They just learned it for this covers competition and just killed it.

I remember reading that their albums are like a continuing science fiction story by the lead singer. That’s so cool and really ambitious IMO. They’re not really my type of music, but the song you posted was decent. This gets a bump for being something I don’t normally listen to.
