Walrus 11thish (Pauwl's) - Reveal Thread

Yeah it’s ok isn’t it, though not quite the late period Led Zep it wants to be.

Tame Impala rivals a lot of classic rock bands for me.

*Admittedly not having heard the 4th album yet and I know its a whole different direction.

BORNS - Past Lives

" I might be remembering this wrong but I believe someone posted their search for “dream pop” when looking for a song for you grab bag category and this song was listed on there. This song has been a favorite of mine for a few years, although its relationship to a major life event has completely changes its meaning for me. I considered submitting this song for basically every category except 4 but I chose this one because I didn’t want to include the story with my entry; I can share it later if people are interested. This is the version of the song that I usually listen to and I slightly prefer it over the album version, I think it sounds a little more “pure” owing to its sparseness."

Review

That was me that posted that. I went back and checked and it was a song called Past Lives but it was by DIIV. Whatever, it doesn’t matter. I checked this guy out and it says he did a song with Lana Del Rey and supported her on tour. If any of you had submitted a Lana song, it probably would have podiumed.

Anyways, this is a good song. I like it. Gets kinda funky in parts. Keyboards. Cool voice.

Sigur Ros - Svefn-g-englar

“I hope this is a Panda (KONY NOTE: poster submitted a pic of adorable panda here that I cannot seem to bring over to the submission)”

Edit: I added one.

This is a panda. I remember this song. Very relaxing. Feedback and reverby. Angelic vocals.

dream pop to grunge to whatever sigur ros is (I like them, I just don’t know what to call this genre)…it’s walrus whiplash!

Well I didn’t get last place so that’s cool. I was waiting for the “right” walrus to submit this to and still got 7th, rip.

They count as dream pop.

Wiki says:

I’m into this more now than when it came out.

weird, I guess I don’t see the “pop” part. I guess because they had a cameo on GoT that means “pop”?

They add the word “pop” to a lot of genres. Dream Pop, Indie Pop, Art Pop. I guess it means it’s pleasant sounding with nice lyrics.

The Jesus and Mary Chain - Sweet Like Honey

" The first to gaze at shoes and boy were those shoes gazed."

Review

I saw these guys live a few years ago. The lead singer had short hair. I think only one guy still had the big hair. They played mostly new songs that I didn’t know. They played this song of course. I remember buying cigarettes off of people out on the balcony and staring at my shoes.

This is a song that I still like. Loud reverb noise and tender lyrics. Feedback. Fuzz. It’s really cool. Just like honey.

Gotta be more guitar driven to get into the space rock/shoegaze territory.

Oh dear, checking in to see I lost to Soundgarden is dispiriting. (The Sea and the Cake.)

Regina Spektor – Samson

"I opted not to pander to you here. Everybody sending in Radiohead songs is a kissass. Decided to introduce you to indie pop singer-songwriter Regina Spektor if you aren’t familiar with anti-folk music. She became much better known when he composed and performed the OP for Orange Is The New Black but IMO that song is one of her weaker ones.

This is song about a woman whose boyfriend is suffering from cancer. The connection of course being that cancer causing weakness and loss of hair just as Samson’s strength was in his hair. I really suggest just listening to most of her work especially from Soviet Kitsch, Begin to Hope, and Far."

Review

I’m only vaguely familiar with Regina Spektor. This is really pretty. Heartfelt vocals over a nice piano melody. This is very good. I listen to alot of female singer-songwriters. This just misses the podium.
