Walrus 11thish (Pauwl's) - Reveal Thread

Because “Hocus Pocus” is a better song imo

I dunno. I’m in second to last place. Seems pretty spot on

Im not saying its a commonly used term. So albums that came on the heels of the golden age (88-93) and were mostly insrumental in nature.

Albums that were in the “Acid Jazz” or “Trip Hop” section at tower records in the mid and late 90’s. Later falling under the umbrella of “Downtempo” when the soundscapes became more diverse.

DJ Shadow “Endtroducing”
Just going to name drop some artist but with Shadow his first album is so superior to anything else he ever did and is desert island material for sure.

DJ Krush “Strictly Turntablized”
Portishead
DJ Cam
DJ Spooky
Amon Tobin
Coldcut
Bonobo
DJ Vadim (The beginning and end of 90’s russian hip hop). Those old Jazz Fudge releases are rare as hell on vinyl. You can also absolutely hear the culture in his productions too.

Ninja Tune and Mo Wax almost had the market cornered on old school downtempo.

Also, now that I think about it post hip hop was probably not the best terminology as it should include so many subgenres that it is too vague.

Probably the most interesting parts to me are the crossroads of trap and cumbia.

When this is done Pauwl Im gonna send you a gift. Do you have a turntable?

I do not, lol. Thank you, but no. I do not require any gifts for doing this Walrus. I’ve entered almost every Walrus before this and this is my way of giving back. Providing me with new music to listen to is gift enough for me.

Look at that race for last. It is TIGHT

Also, if youre looking for for therapeutic vibes then Khruangbin is where its at right now. They blew up starting about a year.5 ago and are killing it right now.

Sweet texas funk with a shit ton of reverb and a touch of dub and disco.

Familiarity really does affect my enjoyment of music. That’s just the way my brain is programmed. I really like to hear new music that I’ve never heard before. I judge mostly by how much I enjoyed the song in the playlist. If I’ve heard it before to where I’m numb to it, then I tend to want to skip it. The only entry I really cheated with the familiarity clause was the Smiths song a while back.

For the next category, I’m not applying any familiarity clauses or made up bumps or anything of the sort. It will be strictly based on my personal enjoyment.

Also…

I AM THE LAW!!!

Not sure what to think of my last pick now. I may have pandered in the wrong direction.

story checks out :frowning:

I don’t know if everyone gets why I make the Judge Dredd reference other than the movies.

Btw, Cat 3 may have been my ringer, but Cat 5 is by far my favorite submission, even if it doesnt place well.

This record is getting older but still one of the most interesting crossroads of indie rock, downtempo, future r&b, and potatoes. The rock aesthetics employed are especially interesting to me since they made this on fruity loops. (tho they collected some samples in extremely unique ways).

After declaring “I am the law”. This is what happened:

Another track from Express Rising. This song off his 3rd album heading more into soundtrack territory and ambient country leanings (reminiscient of older modest mouse moments that bled into electronic moments).

This song is simple but was stuck in my head days later after listening to it.

Bring it on

Ill stop ball hogging the thread but since Ambient music is your next phase I couldnt not mention Boards of Canada. The undisputed masters of Nostalgic downtempo and childhood memories. Their lore is strong too as they incorporate alot of interesting concepts in their production. Palindromes, unidentifiable sample sources, mathematical concepts like the golden ratio. They have an absolute cult following and give zero fricks about money. They have releases going back to the 80’s that were never released and probably will never be as some were scarcely produced as gifts for friends. THey also dont do live shows save for an appearance at ATP and a couple other one offs for close friends.

A couple of my favorites

Not heard many musicians that can take you into those painfully introspective moments like Pink Floyd, Mogwai, etc etc.

Hoping for my best ever finish so I won’t feel obligated to enter any future walruses and risk doing worse

I recognized the last one from Salad Fingers.
