Played Fall Guys a bit with my girlfriend and somehow won back to back games. I might as well retire now b/c I don’t think that’s happening again.
You will also get the first DLC for free if you connect your Epic account to your Total War account.
Hey, question for those who know about GPUs and monitors.
My wife’s friend built a PC for our kid as a gift. I was not privy to the build beforehand aside from knowing it was coming. In anticipation of its arrival, I bought my son a new monitor:
I guessed wrong, though, as the monitor is Freesync, while the GPU is Nvidia and therefore Gsync:
This sort of compatibility is not something I’ve ever thought about - I’ve just bought monitors and they’ve worked fine (I’ve actually only had one HD monitor). Will that monitor still work with that GPU? If so, is there some massive benefit to buying a GSync monitor? GSyncs appear to be pricier. I believe I read I’d need a Display Port cable for max benefit if they can work together, but I’d have to read up more.
There’s also this monitor for $20 more, but I can’t find any info about Freesync/GSync:
The AOC monitor is a VA panel, the BenQ is TN. If I needed a DisplayPort cable, the difference in price basically accounts for it, as a cable costs around $20 at Micro Center.
I should note with the above that normally, I’d just plug it all in and try it, but in shipping, the fucking CPU heatsink/fan assembly came off, so I need to fix that first. I have to go get some thermal paste. Figured since I have to go to Micro Center, anyway (I’d normally order online so I don’t have to go into a store in the COVID era, but clearly my kid is eager to try out the rig), figured I’d ask about the monitor so I can return that at the same time, if necessary.
It probably won’t run at 144hz, but your kid won’t notice.
I skimmed but it should work, just the Gsync won’t work. Gsync monitors work with NVIDIA cards and will keep a minimum and stable frame rate no matter what afaik but it should still work with the sync setting off I believe. My gamer buddy recommended doing GSync since I have a Nvidia 1070 Ti and I have 1 of the linked monitors with GSync for gaming and another for a second monitor w/out Gsync (1080 instead of 1440p also). Usually I play MMOs with PVP and have settings low for maximum frame rate and ping and tbh haven’t noticed a difference. I may even have GSync off for those MMOs, it’s been a bit.

it will use 144 hz just fine
gsync works with nvidia gpus and gsync monitors
freesync works with amd cpus and freesync monitors
not having them won’t matter all that much IME. depends on how hard he games ldo
This reminds me of the time I spent at my friends’ place a year ago about right now telling their kids how they kept dying in Fortnite because of their shitty internet plan and bandwidth issues. My friend was not impressed.
Thanks for the quick replies.
Do I need to grab a DisplayPort cable or just use the included HDMI?
Also, he’s a kid, so he games, but it’s not like he’s a pro gamer or anything. He’s mostly been playing Roblox and coding games in Unity lately. Also likes Overwatch. With a new PC, he’s looking forward to playing more shooters and what-not. His big thing right now, though, is VR. He’s figured out how to get the Oculus Quest to work wirelessly with Steam Desktop and it even works with a Link cable, which it shouldn’t be able to with our PCs.
I built our two rigs 5 and 6 years ago as budget gaming PCs and they still run great. I play Overwatch almost every day and it runs just fine. Not ultra high graphics settings, but I’m getting 60 FPS easily. I can go higher, but it actually runs worse if I do. I’m not particularly worried about performance with the new PC, as it will be a ton better than what we have, which works well. As long as it can ratchet up the graphics and still have a nice framerate, that’s cool.
Just trying to figure out if I need to do something special with the monitor. If not, I’ll just get the thermal paste to fix the heat sync.
i think displayport is better than hdmi if you have it
display port is gonna be better but hdmi will be ~fine.
as he ages he’s probably gonna look into this stuff himself and do the work for you.
I can pickup a DP cable no problem since I have to grab the thermal paste, anyway. And I’ll end up with a free HDMI cable, so that effectively reduces the price a few bucks.
Just get the damn VGA cable and tell him how tough you had it as a child gamer.
If you have HDMI I wouldn’t bother with DP. You’ll never notice the difference.
We got everything setup last night. Despite the fact that the box said only an HDMI cable was included, there was also a DP cable. My son loves it. He was just sitting there watching an HD nature video, mouth agape.
Lol the fucking starfish blob boss in sonajiz temple gave me hell. Took about 40 tries several of which where he was down to 1-2 hits and i couldnt pull it off
The boss fights in this game are absolutely intense. The timing for some of the dodges has to be perfect. My strat is i basically take a hi-sandwich every pause there is in combat.
On that fight i had to use the full course buff though. Absolutely brutal
Lol, yeah, trying to get a break on that guy is ridiculous. That was the first fight where I considered taking the difficulty down a notch. It’s so brutal. I got through it finally without a nerf, but the final boss I eventually had to nerf one notch.
Picked up UFC 4 this week. It’s fun. I have no idea what I’m doing but the career is fun so far and the presentation is great.
Yea it’s a great game overall and i enjoyed career mode. I think the grappling minigame is a little tedious, or maybe I just dont understand it. I strike all day.
Online I remember something really annoying me, maybe it was grapple spam or something. I cant remember at the moment.
Overall i almost enjoyed it as much as fight night round 4/champion and that’s saying a lot because those were excellent fighting sports games for their time.
What i enjoyed about the exploration is, for me, it flowed very naturally. I didnt have to spend a lot of time in my map like in RDR2. I could just head to the next objective and a yellow bird appears and I followed it - I discovered all the stuff I needed to that way.
However, yea, late in the game it gets tedious. The only thing in the way of me getting 100% is getting all the shrines and stuff, and there’s no way I’m ever gonna be bored or drunk enough to do that.
Is RDR2 worth picking back up again? I stopped playing in the middle of the chapter with the feuding plantation families.
