You gotta tell us what game it was. I’m shocked any PS1 JRPGs are still playable. Hoping it’s Parasite Eve but I don’t think that game was all that long.
Yea I play on standard. I used to quit games when the outcome was clear. I try and finish most of them now.
Nah, Parasite Eve is really short (< 8 hours). The Chrysler Building optional dungeon is actually longer than the main game iirc.
The game I was playing (still am) is called Star Ocean, The Second Story. I really like it, and I don’t think JRPGs have aged poorly. But then again, I don’t like modern games. My sister just showed me Breath of the Wild, which I remember reading and hearing that it was a literal GOAT game, and I didn’t like it at all.
I didn’t like it either but probably for the same reasons I wouldn’t like a lot of older RPGs - lots of aimless wandering and busy work that isn’t actually all that much fun to play. I remember the Star Ocean games but never played any of them, it’s possible that it holds up great but a lot of those games just have bad graphics and clunky interfaces that makes them sort of obnoxious to play today afaik.
How long does a game take u usually? I remember back in the day I could really lose hours over CIV and HOI games. Started watching videos to finally get a grip about HOI 4.
Eh not too long. The first ~100 turns are the part of the game that require the most thought and attention. Playing wide and going domination really slows things down late game and chews up more hours. I’ve never really timed my games but I’d guess like 3-4 is probably average.
So, anyways, I finished GTAV story mode last week and have been slowly trying to get 100% on mission replays. I don’t know if I care to track down the objects and get 100% completion and I’m not enthralled by the idea of GTA Online.
I just finished TLOU2 and decided to circle back to fallout 4 and Witcher 3 to try and 100% them
What the fuck else am I going to do
Not sure if anybody is into the speed running scene, but if so, any suggestions would be appreciated.
I have beaten A Link to the Past roughly at least once a year since it came out. Its something I just pick up and play for a few hours and beat when I am bored or near the holidays and have a few hours free time.
I’ve decided to try to start learning the speedrun for the game, and am entirely new to the whole thing. I assume the best option is to learn little tricks and repeat them over and over until I have them like clockwork, or possibly start by just learning the route for the entire run (about 1:40-2:00.) But I really don’t know what is the best way. Should I go segmented and master segments before trying to put them all together, or should I just start with a full run and a map in front of me and try to continually improve on my time?
Hello, i am very into speedrunning.
I think for a longer speed run like that (i didnt look it up but i imagine its like an hour or more) it’s best to just get set up with tracking software so you can time your splits.
Just see what the best time you can do the first run playing as fast as you can. Then look at where you can shave time off. Take the easiest ways to shave time as possible, and then get to progressively more difficult techniques as it becomes impossible to beat your best times without them.
My main speed run game is mario bros and I’ve hit the point that to beat my best elapsed time i’m gonna have to start learning really technically tricky glitches and i didnt want to, so im basically done.
Remember, you are competing against yourself.
Awesome, thanks for the words man. Gonna keep plugging away at it.
And since we got to talking about ALTTP lately, a huge recommend for the game CrossCode which hit consoles yesterday. The main character Lea is the cutest video game character in a long time. The writing is quick, witty, and snappy. The story is pretty interesting, and the combat is an absolute blast. Highly recommended for anybody who is into 16 bit RPG/Beatemup/Adventure/puzzle game hybrids.
Do you play Kaizo? If you like speedrunning Mario, you get a similar experience of extremely precise movement. And there are literally hundreds of free Kaizo ROM hacks.
Only today during a 2h window starting in 4:15h.
I belong to a Discord server where this game has become sort of a meme because one person really enjoyed it and constantly bugged another server member about playing it to the point where I think someone bought it for him. I forgot it was coming to Switch, thanks for the heads up, I’ll add it to my wishlist and maybe get it soon.
Its well worth it I would say to about a 20 dollar price point. I’ve put about 8 hours in and am only at the first major area out of 5.
dlk9s jr. is playing Ninja Gaiden right now.
The old-school NES version?
Oh yes. Before he went to bed, he said, “I’m going to beat that game.”
I’m so proud.
Twitch and youtube really destroyed gaming for me. I barely can play game without trying to do it hardcore anymore.
Last week there was Thief gold for sale on steam. I played it few years back and even so I hate the story for most part being a stealthy thief is fun. So I tried to play expert the highest difficulty. It takes time but in the end I get the missions done. You arent allowed to kill anyone on that difficulty but i knock most people on the map out because at some point I always get impatient. But now I found youtubers playing the game in supreme stealth meaning they steal but leave the rest like it was or use items but put them back in the exact spot and they dont knock people out they sneak through the whole level and consider it a failure if a guard just gets suspisicious of anything he heard or saw. Now I am already contemplating if I should try it as well. Just the sneaking at least but why have a bow?
Same goes for World of Tanks. Years ago when I still knew people playing the game it was just relaxed and having fun. Nowadays when I want to play a round I focus on one tank and try to achieve 3 gunmarks meaning I do more damage + assisted damge(through spotting and tracking enemy tanks)than 95% of the players. But since I am not that good on average it took me well over 1000 games on tank. I estimate an average game takes about 5 minutes so you know how much time I wasted.
Or Baldurs Gate. God I love that game and I could play it again and again but nowadys only in no-reload fashion because twitch of course.
Problem is I never have that much knowledge like these gamers and I dont want to invest the time getting that knowledge but playing a game just for having fun doesnt have much appeal to me either. Instead I spent a lot of time watching others playing.
