Anyone playing HOI 4? I just downloaded it over the weekend and it seems a tad overwhelming
I have played a few campaigns (and some HOI3). Like most Paradox games it can be overwhelming to new players.
Beginner tips:
Most battles arenāt won by killing the opposing forces but by reducing their organization to 0.
Tanks are good.
Combined arms are good.
Use terrain. Set up your defenses behind rivers or in mountains.
Let the enemy grind himself down against your well-defended positions.
Rotate units in and out of the frontline to let them regain organization.
Depending on which nation you play you can probably get away with building lots of industry to snowball.
Often you can neglect the air force or navy or both.
Fight for provinces with resources. Most territory is unimportant but hold the key positions.
Have you played with Italy? It is the tutorial nation, but from what Iāve read consensus seems to be that it happens to be a good beginner nation to start with. But man, there is seemingly no end to the micromanagement!
I have restarted 3 times because I have yet to be able to beat Ethiopia within 6 months in order to keep the government from fleeing and having this weird sort of war situation where UK teams up with their government-in-exile. Except for some reason I am not allowed to attack UKās possessions in Africa??? It doesnāt make a lot of sense. Also in one run, I declared war in Yemen since they have no one guaranteeing them and I know I will need oil down the lineā¦but for some reason I canāt even get my troops to cross the Red Sea to attack them. I follow the on-screen instructions but they will not move. Do I need Noah or what?
edit Not sure about air force, but Italy apparently does not have a single carrier or even have the tech researched for carriers in 1936, so I assume I need to at least do that much?
Is that bad? I canāt remember. To defeat a nation you have to conquer their victory points. Focus on that and ignore the other territory. Italian forces should be superior.
You canāt attack Great Britain unless you are at war with them and you really donāt want that early on.
I believe you need either naval or air superiority to transport your troops during a naval invasion. Otherwise it wonāt start. Have your troops in a province with a port. Give the naval invasion order. Wait for the preparations to finish (~14 days?). Give some planes the air superiority mission in the sea you need to cross (or have a fleet patrol the area) and start the invasion.
No, donāt invest into the navy at all. Research and ships are very expensive and Italy is far behind Great Britain in that regard. Keep what little navy you have in port for later in the game.

Kerbal Space Program
Shadow Tactics - Aikoās Choice (Standalone Expansion)
I finished the main story of Witcher 3 and got the empress ending. Thatās fine with me.
Iāll probably wrap up the rest of the witcher contracts and side quests before starting the DLC.

Goldeneye drops on Gamepass on Friday. I intend to chop my son to death multiple times Friday night
Oh man, both of the DLCs for that game are incredible.
I hadnāt really taken a deep dive into a game in years, but when you guys all started playing Elden Ring I got weird pandemic fomo so decided to play something: I landed on Breath of the Wild (partly because I already had a switch and partly because Ocarina of Time made a big impression on me back in the day).
Game was fucking wonderful. I know Iām preaching to the choir but the people who still donāt get that these things are a significant art formā¦just gimme a break. I ended up playing it for 365 hours before cutting myself off and storming the castle.
I have completionist tendencies and ended up doing pretty much everything though I didnāt stick it out for all 900 korok seeds because for me it was time to move on. Honestly my last 200 hours of gameplay mostly involved eating gummies and turning off all the lights and putting on headphones and justā¦roaming. Clobbering lynels and going on wild durian runs in the faron jungle and mounting cocaine bears and trying to roll a 200 game in snowling.
I finished over a year ago but the memories linger, like for example early in the game when I was just cruising around trying to unlock all the towers and went into gerudo desert the first time and caught that first distant glimpse of the camel beast rampaging in the dust cloud and I was like oh man, get me the fuck out of here. And actually the lowest moment of the game for me did end up being inside that camel; thunderblight ganonās second phase was the only time where one of those divine hero helper ghosts got pissed at me, if she hadnāt told me to get something metallic close to thunderblight then idk when I wouldve figured that out. I never died but I definitely got my ass rattled all over the inner camel for ten minutes and then always had to look up helplessly at weirdo pirate thunderblight floating up on the ceiling, pelting me with thunder & lightning while I tried to figure out what to do and whether another fistful of gummies would help.
btw does anybody else invert both X and Y axes? I wonder what 80s game cursed me forever with those preferences. Anyway I could rave about BOTW for days but the point is I was just very glad I got tangled up in it. I couldnāt do a game like this every year but I think one or two deep dives a decade is probably my sweet spot. Btw I ended up mostly using a tricked-out ancient armor/weapons build, which had lots of great bonuses, though unfortunately none of them were a cool hat
PS I was proud of my final stable of five steeds (including of course the royal white stallion and the giant horse). They were George, Stan, Fred, Larry, and Keith; they were unafraid and true. Especially Larry.
I will buy you or anyone else here elden ring if you canāt afford it, hmu.
thank you grue, thatās awesome and I hope someone takes you up on that. For me these games just take too much time and they run away with certain parts of my personality (manic perfectionist obsessive) that should be focusing on other stuff right now. But Iāll for sure play more games like thisāI think theyāre exhilarating and imaginative and beautiful and I love themāand fwiw, through you guys Elden Ring left a vicarious impression on me so if I get around to playing it five years late like BOTW then Iām sure another wordy post will be incoming
I always invert Y, probably because I played a million hours of GoldenEye in college. Never tried inverting X.
I just started playing Elden Ring and boy, is it difficult. I got my son God of War for Hanukkah, which he loved and then piqued his interest in Elden Ring, so he used gift money to buy it. He REALLY wanted me to play it, so Iāve been playing as well (thank you, Steam sharing).
I actually have a bunch of hours - maybe 40+? - but I play slowly, so Iām not even close to winning yet. I think Iāve only beaten two or three of the ārealā bosses. This isnāt my kind of game, but I am very much enjoying it. The world is just so interesting.
I donāt love that it just throws you in and doesnāt tell you what the fuck youāre supposed to do or what anything is, but I guess figuring it all out is part of the fun. I have a million items I donāt know what to do with. I have resorted to watching a few videos to help me out - how the hell did people figure everything out before anyone posted walkthrough videos?
Right now, Iām just sort of exploring as far as I can go without dying. Iām up at some city right by the Erdtree at the moment.
Astrologer/mage build.
Not sure if Iāll ever give Elden Ring a shot but I did recently start Sekiro. Iāve never played a Souls game and never really had a desire to play one but i was craving a sword fighting game so i gave it a shot. I got sucked back into Last of Us replays when the show came out so Sekiro is on pause for now.
If you want a couple general hints that I didnāt quite figure out until a subsequent playthrough
there are ātunnelsā in each area that have smithing stones, with the level of the smithing stones corresponding to the difficulty of the area. it really helps to do the tunnels and then upgrade your main weapon as much as possible before moving on to a more difficult level. this may not matter as much if youāre a mage depending on what staff you have.
also, vigor is the most important stat to upgrade early on, at least to 25 or so
So Goldeneye on Xbox does not allow for cheat entries for multiplayer and the only way to unlock cheats is to beat the game/levels on certain difficulties/in certain times.
Some of these are massively difficult to clear. I unlocked all characters by basically running through every level on agent, but the higher diffoculty levels and target times can be really really hard to clear.
Im even having trouble clearing streets on agent in 1:45.
some of those challenges are no joke. i remember the facility one being especially hard. i donāt think i ever cleared the caverns challenge.
