What the hell, even the tiny countries are kicking my ass, seems kind of busted.

itā€™s not supposed to be fairly balanced across all countries. itā€™s historically balanced. pick a better country

Does this game fuck with oneā€™s history knowledge at all? I appreciate that it could improve my geography knowledge a ton, but I have some investment of effort and concentration nā€™ shit to know what happened and when. Like Iā€™m not going to play for 30 hours and think Portugal colonized Lithuania in 1543 or something?

Iā€™ve been a series of books by Simon Winder that are funny, informative and I really enjoy - not for the sort of pages of kings genealogy sort of stuff, but kind of a scattershot wander about Germany/Danubia/Lotheringia - theyā€™re in paperback, and I enjoyed them.

Weirdly it gives a scary perspective on super evil decisions. Like if I donā€™t colonise America quickly then the UK is gonna beat me to it and become super powerful. You want to do it peacefully, thereā€™s even a bonus if you keep the natives around but the 4th or 5th time they rise up and destroy your colony and set in you back like 3 years of progress you start thinking fuck it just murder the lot of them.

Or your country is falling apart due to low religious unity. You want to live in peace with the dirty prots but a good purge really brings people together and makes the Pope a good friend giving you +1 prestige per month! Bring on the Spanish inquisition then I guess. We can always kill anyone who revolts.

Things like trade power etc actually ā€œforceā€ you to make historically accurate, shitty decisions. You wouldnā€™t do it if it were real people. But did the rulers of old see their dominion as full of real people or were they just looking at a big map and trying their best to paint it all yellow?

I started off a Brunei instead and stormed my way across Borneo. Itā€™s a fun game but idk if I have the time to learn all the game mechanics and whatnot.

A game I sincerely wish I could recommend is Stellaris. Unfortunately itā€™s AI is always broken.

Iā€™ve heard a reviewer describe Darkest Dungeon as being a fantasy middle-management simulator: youā€™re forced to hire guys, cut costs on supplies and healthcare, send them off to battles theyā€™re not ready for. Then when theyā€™re broken, you fire them and hire new guys. You canā€™t possibly afford to take care of everyoneā€™s physical/mental health problems so you have to decide to send some guys out knowing theyā€™re going to snap and be useless afterward.

If you guys like strategy games Iā€™d get a gameboy emulator on your phone and get Advance Wars 1+2.

Advance wars was good but I always felt like ranged was a bit broken (esp that hero that had +1 ranged) and all-round heroes like Andy or Olaf were generally worthless.

The air eagle guy with double strike was pretty fuckin broken too. Bombers in general were broken - you could just park them outside of missiles range and the AA land unit would still get pulverized 1 on 1. Only jets could deal with those things properly, which turned every fight into an air war.

I didnā€™t like stellaris at first, but eventually got into it and played a few hundred hours.

I never like any paradox strategy game at first lol but Iā€™ve ended up loving eu4 ck2 and stellaris, which are now among my favorite games. Iā€™m still at the ā€œdonā€™t get itā€ stage on imperator Rome but Iā€™m sure Iā€™ll find it eventually

My problem with stellaris is that the AI is super super broken. Itā€™s also horribly balanced, which isnā€™t a huge deal in most paradox games because historyā€¦ but in the case of stellaris itā€™s a pretty big problem. Iā€™ve played a lot of stellaris and I really really want to like it more than I doā€¦ but itā€™s not a particularly great game by comparison to the other paradox options.

I started Imperator and then refunded it. Iā€™m sure Iā€™ll eventually play it a ton, but Iā€™m going to wait a year or two until they get the bugs out. Thereā€™s no reason for me to play a game that is meaningfully worse than EU4 and CK2 when those exist.

Very pumped for CK3 and will almost certainly play it a lot on release. It looks very different than the other offerings. Honestly Imp just wasnā€™t different enough from CK2/EU4 to keep my interest and be worth the learning curve.

I canā€™t finish Darkest Dungeon because itā€™s so grindy that I get frustrated, throw my high level guys at a boss, get wiped, which makes me feel even more down because then Iā€™ve got to grind 5 new guys

They released a new version that has an easier difficulty level. I still havenā€™t finished it.

Iā€™m the odd one out as this year Iā€™ve bought civ 6 and war groove as my strategy games.

Yeah itā€™s still a grind afaik. I played it a fair bit on both computer and tablet but donā€™t think Iā€™m even close to finishing a single run and at this point I donā€™t think itā€™s worth it.

Currently playing through Pyre and Super Metroid. They are ummm very different but both are good and would recommend!

There are a lot of very good metroidvania games on switch

Metroidvania is my favorite genre, and I just got a Switch for Christmas. What do you recommend?
