Video Games

Bunch of new content is coming for Hitman S3 on the 20th. I was really disappointed with S3 relative to S1-S2, this might make up for it.

I just downloaded it and immediately crashed into a planet lol.

Outer Wilds is probably my top game of all time

And the expansion is almost just as good. Have fun.

I donā€™t really game much anymore (or at all, really) but after messing around with the Switch OLED I developed an odd desire to get back into a game that I remember being absolutely impossible from my childhood.

Watched a few speed runs with commentary closely on Youtube and was thinking ā€œYeah, Iā€™ll have this figured out in no time.ā€ That was delusional. Didnā€™t pull the original hardware yet because Iā€™m not good enough, so Iā€™m using emulation where I can leverage save states to practice trouble spots without running through from the start.

First run I made it to Level 3-2 (the rotating gargoyle towers) on Professional which means I have a long way to go. There are 7 levels you have to beat twice* each before seeing the final boss. Anyway, I think going straight to Professional was the wrong choice: most speedrunners seem to play Normal difficulty, so Iā€™ll stick to that and learn its idiosyncrasies.

*Gotta love how sadist developers let you think you beat it only for the princess to come out and say ā€œOh sure, you killed that boss but not with the correct weapon. Please replay the game from the beginning, but now kill him with this stupid ring that has no range or rate of fire.ā€

Good fucking luck, some of the best 16 bit speedrunners Ive seen wont touch this game.

Why would you do this to yourself?

My main goal is just to be able to beat it period in one sitting. Not sure if Iā€™ll get around to serious speedruns before getting sick of it.

For me, video games are supposed to be hard because thatā€™s what I cut my teeth on. I was an arcade junkie as a kid and started on 8-bit consoles which Iā€™d grind for hours daily. Modern games that are glorified walkthroughs do nothing for me at all. That said, Super GnG was an entirely different tier of difficult, and I didnā€™t know anyone who ever came close to beating it at the time.

Yep. Iā€™m exploring this ocean/tornado island now. I picked up a scroll off the ground and then immediately died. No idea what that was about but Iā€™m sold.

Iā€™ve never played it, but Mass Effect Legendary Edition is on game pass as of yesterday. Iā€™m going to try downloading and maybe check it out this weekend.

Also, for Skyrim fans, Dylan Perryā€™s excellent one-click download, ultra-difficult survival oriented modlist ā€œUltimate Skyrimā€ is being released for Skyrim SE under the name ā€œWildlanderā€ next week. Iā€™ve put a lot of hours into the original Ultimate Skyrim, and as someone who loves both Skyrim and survival games, and has little tolerance for janky mods, he really does a fantastic job. Itā€™s better than 99% of stand-alone major studio releases.

There are food, water, temperature and sleep requirements. Your first few levels itā€™s important to find/craft some water skins, food, and camping equipment. Itā€™s not perma death, but in my playthroughs Iā€™ve treated it as such along with rerolling random characters for each run and I think it adds to the experience. You get dropped into a random spot in the world with some basic gear and set out to do whatever you want. I have not touched the main quest line, mostly because early stuff like Bleak Falls Barrow is basically impossible until youā€™ve leveled up and gotten some nice gear. Iā€™ll usually see what kind of character I get, make some modest goals (e.g. I want to buy a house in the west, set up a wicked alchemy lab and become an expert at potion making, or I want to join the thieves guild and rise up the ranks) and then go out and try to do it. The default settings

The enemies are pretty difficult - a mudcrab can easily kill you in your first few levels if youā€™re not careful, and I wouldnā€™t try fighting even solo low level bandits until level 5 or so (unless youā€™ve got a horseā€¦ IMO riding on horseback and clubbing bandits as you ride by is pretty OP). Setting up camp in the evening (or paying to stay at an inn) and having food and drink at all times is obviously important. You can die from cold, and you will do so quickly if you go into cold water and canā€™t find a fire when you get out. On top of that, every aspect of the game is really expanded upon with the mods - additional spells and a 100% revamped college of winterhold, quality of life improvements for crafting, thereā€™s a completely new farmhouse you can buy and hire workers and grow ingredients, followers are apparently revamped (I donā€™t use them, idk).

I canā€™t speak to the SE edition coming out next week, which is going to have some changes from the original edition, but if youā€™re a fan of Skyrim or survival games (long dark/green hell/etc), itā€™s worth checking out. You just need the base game, then download a program called wabbajack, and it will download all of the individual mods and do all the work of ordering them and making everything ready to play.

Thereā€™s maybe 10 minutes of setting up things in the mod configuration menu before your first play through, which you then save as a template, and then another 2-3 minutes for each new run. Apparently the menu stuff is also going to be automated in the SE edition.

Will this hit xbox as well? With legendary edition on gamepass I might try this

I believe ME Legendary is on both Xbox and PC game passes.

No no, the skyrim mod

Ah, unfortunately no for that. There are some officially released mods on the consoles, but for the most part the modding scene is mostly PC based I think. They just donā€™t have the same kind of access to modify assets and whatnot on the consoles

Goddamn it now I have to buy Outer Wilds.

Made Level 4 tonight. Those blue motherfuckers with axes that spawn out of the walls put me on mega tilt though. One spawned out of nowhere as I was jumping, knocked me out of bronze armor, knocked me into a torch which is completely worthless on this map, and then knocked me off the level to my death all in one move. Really need crossbow on this map and after several fast deaths with torch I rage quit.
