Or slay the spire if you’re looking for something to just pass the time that you can easily pause.
I would actually strongly recommend the following in order of difficulty to pick up:
easy to get into:
Invisible, Inc.
FTL (again if your tastes run more to sci fi this is good for a lot of play)
Darkest Dungeon
Slay the Spire
Into the Breach
if your computer is a bit beefier XCOM 2
the following are sort of hard to dig into but well worth it:
Rimworld
The Age of Decadence (if you want an old old old school RPG that is actually kind of hard)
Star Traders: Frontiers (if you want to play a space opera type strategy/rpg hybrid)
Crusader Kings 2
EU4
@hobbes9324 you have about enough time on your hands to really nerd out on one. I would probably look at them and pick the one that seems the most appealing and just play it and ignore the others.
Yes this is me admitting that I’ve had way too much time on my hands for about 4 years lol.
FWIW, Xcom2 is my most satisfying overall gaming experience in the last decade. In addition to the base game and the phenomenal expansion, the mod scene is so fucking dense you can make about 9-10 different experiences out of the base game alone. How it was left off so many best of the decade lists is beyond me.
Yeah I played it a lot too lol. Definitely in that crazy strong Eu4 or rimworld tier of strategy games… I’ve got more than a thousand hours in all three. Those numbers are obviously inflated by the fact that games have a tendency to run in the background on my computer 24/7 but I can still say I’ve sunk insane amounts of time in them.
So I only bought the $1 eu4 bundle because I have a tendency to play games for 15 minutes, quit and never play again. That way I can see if i like it. Is this a big mistake?
You didn’t invest much so you’re fine I think. But I’d recommend not giving up after a few minutes because it’s a deep game and you won’t be able to absorb it all quickly. It took me a full play thru on Ottomans to really get into it and start enjoying it, but once I did I was hooked.
Just know going in that, as alluded to already itt, there are a ton of mechanics going on behind the scenes all at the same time, but don’t let that overwhelm you. You don’t have to know exactly how everything works in order to enjoy the game, only to master it, which can take years.
I would say yes but boredsocial would probably say no (he can correct me). I realize that isn’t particularly helpful but I’d only played the game with all the DLC installed up until I did a Roman Empire run with a mod that did not allow all of the DLC and I didn’t enjoy it as much. But my view was tainted from having started with everything. I already suspected that I would like it because real-time strategy has always been my favorite genre of game.
I’m also a fan of these games. I’d say FTL is the “best” one but it’s also by far the hardest to get a hang of. Into the Breach is by the same team and more approachable but my interest in it fell off sharply once I “figured it out” and was able to win more runs than not. I have the most hours in Slay the Spire of any of these and am always down for a play through but it might not hold your interest for hours straight. Darkest Dungeon has the best aesthetic and if you get into it you might very well spend your whole time playing it but it also gets repetitive as the game goes on. Invisible Inc I probably played the least of but it’s excellent, if you’re a fan of stealth then it might be your best choice since it’s not too hard to make progress and the type of game you learn a little on each run, but it’s also difficult to actually beat the game and even if you do you’ll want to go back again.
I would absolutely say yes. The chances that you say no to the bundle and regret it are pretty high and the regret would be a lot more than 10-13 dollars in lost money. You’re talking about buying something that normally costs at least 80 bucks (and this is deeply discounted on the summer sale level pricing) for 17.
Also I want to make sure I spotlight rimworld super hard. The game is hard to learn, but not harder than eu4… and it’s really really good. I fall into it again for 100+ hours pretty much every year.
Ok I went ahead and bought the full bundle as well. If anyone wants the basic game key send me a pm and I can get it to you for free as I now have 2.
ETA-Super out of the loop gamer question but do i install EU4 and then all these add ons after one by one in steam or is there some faster way to do it. Started to do it last night and it was super tedious and i got distracted and gave up.
It automatically does it from the launcher. Nothing required from you I don’t think… Oh you may have to input the keys into steam one at a time. Just copy and paste them all into steam under activate a game key or whatever. After they are on steam the installation is automatically handled.
You have to do it one by one, but if you link your steam account to your humble bundle account the process is slightly easier as you can just click on like an “activate my game” link for each dlc from the page with all of the steam keys instead of copy pasting every time.
This is the map in my latest spain game. 1777. Closest I’ve ever come to world domination and first time I might actually finish a game of EU4 (I have 714 hours of playtime but 0 completed runs #noragrets)
