US Kills Soleimani in Airstrike

Only upside is Iran has previously made deals with the opponents of one term presidents.

I think it’s a fair point. We had the support of allies back in 2003–who the fuck is going to stand behind Trump now? Even Boris Johnson was like “wtf” when he found out, because UK has service members in region and they weren’t told of the strike ahead of time.

Shocking take

I mean this is an opportunity to engage the US without any help at all from NATO. We’ll probably have a hard time even getting access to military bases to strike from. If I was the Europeans I’d be looking to cut ties with the US… simply too risky.

Europeans tend to be way more anti war and way less nationalistic than the US. The only reason it ever made sense was they were worried about the USSR. That threat is over and there really isn’t one to replace it. Russia is a threat, but does anyone really think Germany vs Russia would be close? They don’t need the US to protect them, and all this American aggression is hard to sell politically.

I don’t see this ending well for us the more I think about it. If I was one of our allies (absolutely including SK who probably want to move in the direction of lasting peace with NK and closer relations with China in the long run) I’d be looking to evict the crazy Yankee warmongers from my country ASAP.

Some people want nothing more in life than to have permission to kill. It’s pretty terrifying.

lmao at the thought this does anything other than solidify the current regime in Iran

Goddamn it the more I think about it the more an image of Putin smiling bigly transposes itself into my field of vision. This is going to be a historic moment. Fuckfuckfuckfuckfuck. The sonofabitch actually did it.

Iran already has the latest and greatest military toys from China and Russia. They are going to be well supplied, well trained, and dug into home ground. We are going to lose this thing and probably badly. Our military is exhausted, overextended, and utterly unprepared for this kind of war.

I don’t think it would be close. Germany would be utterly crushed. Russia wouldn’t even need their nukes.

This seems to be an obvious move for all but the Trump administration. Both the US AND Iran were working with the current Iraqi regime to maintain control in the country. Yet one of those two decided to assassinate the other one’s leader in Iraq.

It is dumbfuckery of the highest order. I am sure Trump will claim he was going to pull out of Iraq anyways and bring the troops home. (Like he brought the troops home from Syria, put them in Iraq and then put them in extreme danger)

lol at anyone suggesting that the UKer’s won’t be behind Boris Johnson and trump in this new found war on terror… Ffs that why they elected Boris we are not Europe anymore…

This is comically wrong. Germany has more people, a much bigger economy, and is still the country that took on the world twice and nearly won both times in the 20th century. Russia is a basket case that is really really good at asymmetric warfare and espionage.

And nobody would get to use nukes because both sides have nukes.

Come on people, who knows exactly what will happen, but it won’t be a ground war in Iran and it certainly won’t be a ground war between Germany and Russia!

Just found out my cousin’s husband is stuck in the Baghdad embassy. He works for the state dept. doing I don’t know what. But my cousin is a wonderful person, probably my favorite relative, the only liberal relative I have, and has spent the better part of her adult life doing human rights work around the Middle East.

Russia has almost double the population of Germany, four times the size in active soldiers and almost 100 times the number of reserves. I don’t know why you think WW1/2 is relevant. During Operation Barbarossa Germany sent 4 million soldiers into Russia and lost. The German armed forces currently have less than 5% that.

Edit: at what point did Germany get nukes?

Ain’t that the whole point of the US stationing forces in Germany — as a deterrent if the Soviets decide to steamroll through Europe?

It’s laughable to think Germany even has a chance against Russia, never mind the upper hand.

Hmm… wasn’t Israel already trying to kill that guy and aren’t SA, UAE etc currently already in proxy wars with Iran? Why would they be anything but happy that the US is fighting with Iran? Wtf does Europe matter? Also, didn’t England just elect Boris Johnson almost entirely on the issue of “immigration”?
