Unstuck Summer Weight Loss Challenge (Potatoes Not Included)

Have you considered trying to make your own Mexican food at home that you might still enjoy but that would be healthier?

That said when I’m in SoCal I can never resist, but I know I’m only there for a week or two and have to make the most of it. I make a breakfast wrap with a low cal tortilla (50 calories), spinach, black beans, fat free shredded cheddar, jalapenos, fajita peppers and onions, and egg whites. Sometimes I add a little hot sauce.

It’s pretty good, I always enjoy it. It’s not the real thing, but it’s not awful either. You could probably approximate your favorite Mexican food in healthier ways. If you get fat free shredded cheddar, you’re pretty significantly altering the macros of the meal.

That’s weird, for me when I’m mentally “on” I can go hours without thinking of eating. Like when I grind long poker sessions, I can go 8 hours without eating without really thinking about it. Try drinking more fluids, the hunger and thirst responses in the body have some similarities and can feel similar. It’ll also keep your stomach from being totally empty, and might help in that regard.

Weighed in yesterday at 249.2, so I guess that’s the official start point for me for the challenge.

July 2-4 were all < 2100 calories, with 94, 92 and 108 grams of protein. I crushed the water intake.

I won’t do daily updates in here, I’ll do weekly, but since yesterday was the first official day:

154 oz of water
1,571 calories
108g of protein
Lifted
60 mins on stationary bike
15 minutes of sun

I considered eating more last night because the caloric intake was probably too low, but I wasn’t that hungry and decided not to make myself eat if I wasn’t hungry. My volume of food is probably more than the calories would indicate, since my calories yesterday were about 90% vegetarian.

Today I weighed in at 247.6. Got my groceries delivered, I need to do some meal prep today. I’m exhausted, Mondays will be my most challenging day as I usually sleep very poorly Saturday and Sunday due to grinding such long hours, but I’m determined to take care of everything and make it to Tuesdays with some momentum.

In honor of the potato diet I am most of the way through a family size Sweet Chili and Sour Cream Miss Vickies.

Didn’t eat for 22 hrs after the burrito. 308.5 weigh in, 0.5 up. Assume that’s from Friday/Sat.

The burrito was actually reasonably healthy. Its was more of a “make you own burrito” plate with lean chicken, beans, rice, guac, etc and two largish tortillas. Mexican food i make at home tends to be even worse (don’t like cooking so make too much).

The problem with this Mexican place is 1) it’s good, 2) it’s a block from my house along my return walk path. Hell, if i dealt with my other shit i would be fine eating there daily (well, except the carnitas super nachos, which are like 2k calories).

Have work to finish but want to get in 45min-1hr of exercise. If I’ve got time to post on Unstuck then I’ve got time to exercise is my general thinking.

Sounds like we are on a similar path, man. Wrestled in high school but lost interest. Ballooned up after eating the way I did then, to about 250 and gross. Then watched calories and focused after college and dropped to a fit 220. Had kids and became complacent, ballooned to 320. Now focusing again, down to 290 and looking to get back to a fit 220-235

This is the hardest part for me. I’m just not focused on water at all and only drink when I’m past thirsty, so that’s not good at all

If you’re a believer in the fit approach then I’d think you need to set aside an hour a day for strenuous activity. Probably not that easy but can negotiate it with the wife. Us bigger guys face health issues down the road if we don’t get exercise.

Oh sure, I’m starting slow but will work my way to strenuous. Right now I walk/bike about 60-90 minutes a day. Once I’m able to incorporate weights again, I will

My bro (4 kids, programming job) lost like 50 lbs biking for an hour after work before commuting home. Seems like a good strategy.

I keep a pitcher by my computer while I work and log each glass as I drink it. That helps a lot.

Yeah I think part of the problem is I’m not working right now

Well bring a pitcher of water or unsweetened iced tea wherever you are around the house. I find that I’ll drink way more if the glass is always full and I’m keeping track, there’s no effort required to go get more, and as soon as I refill it I have a little more. Research shows that each glass boosts your metabolism by 10-30% for 60 minutes.

In one day late. Starting weight is 222.5. Been bouncing between 210 and 215 preCOVID and drifted up thanks to late night doordash and more drinking.

My tactics:

  • Exercise most days (Barre videos w/ wife, bike rides)
  • Strict logging of calories every day and stay under 1900 7 day average

Dunno, seems like drinking when thirsty seems is a sensible approach. Never seen any compelling evidence that drinking tons of water is healthful, that’s just BIG WATER propaganda.

Off day from weights but did a 2 mile walk. Made it past the Mexican place without incident and cooked potatoes and onions for dinner. It was actually quite tasty.

potato recipe was 2 potatoes, 1 onion, about 3 tablespoons of oil, generous amount of pepper and some other spices.

This is a bit of a different concept. I can be engaged in some activity that is fairly intense, like poker, with minimal food. I’m more thinking of activities like studying where one is prone to distraction and needs to be rested and “on the ball” to perform well. I’m not as effective at things like studying or detailed drudge work when hungry.

That looks really good. Just sliced them up and stir fried them?

Turned out better than expected, as I don’t cook much. Sliced the potatoes, put in skillet about a minute after I put in the oil. Skillet was fairly high flame (4.5 of 6). Sliced and added the onion about 2 mins later. Stirred/flipped like 4 times in 10-12 mins, adding some salt, pepper, and a herb mix.

edit: while it was good, at other times I might have garnished it with 4 eggs and 4 slices of buttered toast and maybe some bacon and sausage.

Posting to join.

Seems like that’s three of us. I haven’t been under 200lbs since I was 12 years old. Senior year of college I was 230lbs with a 36 waist and ran a 6:30 mile while squatting 2x my body weight. In the last 10 years or so I’ve gone from there to 290 to 230 and back and forth idk how many times. Am currently an out of shape 270 off a 285 from January 1st. I absolutely know that’s still too heavy for my height. The goal is to continue down to the 220 range with less weights and more cardio and maintain that for longer than a couple months.

How tall are you?

I’m trying to figure out a good weight for my height and frame. I’m 6"1’ with a large frame that I’ve had even when I was smaller. I seem to hit a major wall right around 225. I’ve been there a number of times as an adult but cannot get anywhere near 200
